• Yuji Naka on PS Universe

PSOCecilJake writes, "1up has posted a part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's interview with Yuji Naka, head of Sonic Team. Inside, Naka discusses PS Universe, the next consoles, his like for Nintendo, his history, Sonic, and says that a PSO on PSP might be possible. Destroys the rumors of a PSO DS, doesn't it? "

Indeed it does. Unfortunately this appears to have killed any hopes of the Gamecube or Xbox. In the end it is the right decision however. Given that many people have/will be migrating up to the PC version of PSO (Blue Burst), there's no reason for them continue staying on that console. However... its still possible given how early in development the game is if Sony doesn't even know about it.

So why are there no chance of having PSU on GC or X-box?

Because the PS2, unfortunately, has the largest user base. Many many more mainstream gamers. If you can hook them in then it means much more money for sonic team.

Unfortunately, the bigger the mainstream population is, the more cheaters there are.

Well, I'm going to have to migrate.

I hope PSO BB and PSU all fit on one computer, I have no computer knowledge what so ever. X.x

Bad PS2 graphics + Contributing to Sony + Addition of "casual" ps2 noobs + No computer + Server-side saving = No point in continuing my existence... goodbye cruel world... =(

i think it will, i dont know how big PSO BB is now but when i had ep 1 + 2 on my comp it was less then 2 gigs

and if im going to take a guess, if PSU is an rpg for the ps2, with an online element for the pc, ps2, im going to take a guess the game will be about 4-5gigs in size

so if you have 7gb of disk space left on your computer your all set

It's not just the larger userbase. It's pretty blatant to me that PC and PS2 users are going to play on the same servers... their being released at the same time just implies that. Assuming I'm right, Xbox is ruled out because Xbox Live is a closed online gaming network. PC and Xbox users would not be able to play alongside each other, which limits developers' best interests. This is probably why Final Fantasy XI never saw an Xbox release, and also why the GameCube and Xbox editions of PSO were never linked, and never will be linked, ever.

Also, the discussion on the hard drive for PS2 implies that the game will utilize the PS2 hard drive. This effectively rules out the GameCube, because it has no hard drive option.

PlayStation 2 is the best choice for the game, because it is the only console of the three that gives developers the most freedom.

I think he means that he doesn't have a PC.

Also, how are they going to do:

"The PSU security will be like that of PSO: BB with server-side characters and info."

When PSU will supposedly have two modes (says EGM):

"For the full story on the offline and online modes of PSU"

"also why the GameCube and Xbox editions of PSO were never linked, and never will be linked, ever."

At least not through Sega. I'm sure someone will make a server that allows both platforms (like they did with the PC and the DC) to connect. The network codes for both versions can't be TOO far off. I guess they'd have to be identical for it to work, though.

It is speculated that offline mode will be set with actual characters with stories behind them and such, and that online mode will be more like PSO currently is.

oh man how dissapointing. I always hated the idea of sonic team possibly leaving nintendo but for sony I mean I have a ps2 and ordered a psp but the fact of it is dissapointing. I just hope it comes for:nintendo DS, gamecube, xbox, or computer.

What? PS2? The PS2 is a popular console, no doubt about that but it's on its way out.

Unless PSU gets ported to Xbox or GC, forgettaboutit.

Sonic Team has experience with cheaters? I guess it was their evil plan all along to allow cheaters so thaty they could learn about it and in theory not f**k it up for the next game?

*Yawn* I am so not convinced. BB adds some neat new features, but will it be international? Will BB USA be connected to BB JP and BB EU?

PSO will most likely be the very last Sonic Team online game I ever buy. It's PSO until TFLO for me most likely!

      He did say "No Computer."

I technically do have a compy and it can run Blue Burst ok mid spec, really well on low spec but I'm not sure if it will be able to run PSU. That's what my GC and Xbox are for.

PS2 on it's way out? I do not have a PS2, nor do I care for one. Currently there is a user base of 80 mil plus, and considering that Sony put out PS1 games for several years after the PS2 arrived, I think SonicTeam is making a smart move.

As far as their experience w/cheaters goes. I have been burned many times and have called either SEGA or Microsoft(depending on whether I was on the DC, GCN or Xbox) and complained. I believe what he was referring to was that they have learned from their mistakes and being able to start over fresh w/PSU, can apply an ounce of prevention as opposed to a pound of cure later on. When I said pound I meant that literally. lol

I hope you give PSU a try. I have had fun playin w/ya on the Xbox and hopefully I'll see ya on PSU when that comes out.

TFLO looks nice and I'll probably give that a try, but I think PSU will be out before TFLO.
