• Some PSOBB News from IGN

IGN Reported this today in their PC news:

April 13, 2004 - As reported in our recent Gaming Life in Japan, the latest Phantasy Star Online game is coming to the PC.

Blue Burst is actually just the PC version of Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1 & 2 which already appeared on GameCube and Xbox. However, there are a few changes in store. You can now access shortcut commands, visible at the bottom of the screen. A new character, Momoka, appears in the game's lobby area and offers up new quests. More exciting is the new "Team System," where you hook up with team members and can even communicate with one another from across different ships.

There is also the promise of improvements in a few areas that have gotten a bit stale in the PSO world. Sonic Team has mentioned improved graphics and control. We're not sure how much these areas will be improved, but with the PSO engine being a few years old now, we'll take any additions.

The biggest change appears to serve as a good means of keeping people from cheating. Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst is an online-only experience. Character data is now stored on the game servers far out of reach from those who would modify their characters to give them an advantage in battle.

A closed Beta test for Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst began recently in Japan, meaning an official release for the game should happen shortly.

      Hmph, some improvement.

We now lose offline mode so we can't get our characters up and if Sega gets hit by a massive storm, we can't play online so stuff that.

Hell, I'm not paying to just play a game online, I already pay to connect to the net and as far as I'm concern its more theft from Sega since they can't even to support their own console let alone company anymore.

      Cheap scates..

Hmm, I wonder how much it costs to save your characters on their server. I guess it's only online, and no offline value.

Sounds like a great idea...no off-line PSO, after all it is called Phantasy Star ONLINE. No more cheating that ruined the other versions. This will be superb, and I think all hardcore legit PSOers will lap it up.

      Top job.

Someone will find an exploit, and tell everyone about it, then everyone uses the hell out of it. Then there will be a character wipe and everyone will suffer.

The last version's PC servers lasted how long..? Barely 2 years? No offline AT ALL is stupid. (Although they might be nice and release a patch to let you play offline when they take servers down.. but it's sonic team.. we shouldn't get our hopes up)

How are multiple characters supposed to be handled? Are we gonna need to pay more to have more? For consoles it just depended on how many memory cards you wanted to invest in. For old PC version you had like a 100 character limit. I don't see a 100 char limit happening for a game with server side saving.

Also unless you, as said in one of the posts, are 'hardcore legit', you're gonna hate the fact that the PIPE TRICK is gone.. But what's this..? Recobox trick I bet will still be there.

Who raises their first few char levels online? What hells are classes like FOnewearl supposed to face when they try to get to level 10 without 'battle training'?

Well considering 99% of cheating started with offline exploits, I think this is great news. Yes people will always find a way of exploiting the game, but at least this cuts down on 90% of it. Also, stuff like the pipe trick was kind of boring anyway. I prefer to just play the game with friends like its suppose to be than be a loner piper. Again your point about Forces starting online, and it being hard. The point is that you are meant to HELP and play TOGETHER in this game, play together and you will enjoy it more. The new community additions sound great.

Multiple characters....who knows. Maybe you create as many as you like (within reason) from a menu when you log onto the servers. Choose/make your character from the online log-on screen then head into the lobby..

'The point is that you are meant to HELP and play TOGETHER in this game'

Was that the point? It simply won't happen.. Games that try to be like that have a very select few players willing to play like that.

I agree that pipe trick was really boring though, so now ultra rares will really be.. ultra rare.

But still, forcing everyone to be saved server side wasn't the way to go in a game like this. This game was the perfect mix of being able to solo and being able to play together.. Now with online only, the enemies are so tough you're going to be forced to play together (or stay in one area much longer).

Server side saving was a good idea for some people, but a really crappy idea for others. From sonicteam's POV, this is going to do more harm than good, cause killing off chunks of the playerbase isn't exactly the way to make money.

Another point for me to bring up. The GMs. Seeing as this game will more than likely not see a release outside of japan.. there won't be too many multilingual GMs. What if some japanese player doesn't like how someone is playing? (EXP hogs, people that take rares way too often) They could tell the GM that said person was cheating, and they wouldn't be able to say anything to defend themselves (let's face it, you'd need a really detailed word select to get out of that one)

[Please note: I am against hacking, and duping, and exploiting and all that stuff, I'm talking from the point of view that alot of friends I have wanting to play use dialup and only have one phone line. Alot of this stuff isn't being fair to them. Plus I like to do my major leveling alone.. so easier enemies offline is the way I do it.]

I agree, if you want a better chance of the rares, you have to play solo. Unless of course you have a good group of friends who share and are willing to import the game with you.

I think its a trade-off for a better economy. Unfortunately the exploiters always spoil it for legit people in the long run, people like yourself who like to play offline.

I still think server-side saving is the way to go with this game. It will bring it upto speed in relation with all other online games of this type, and hopefully in the long run produce a better playing environment were rares are rare, and cheaters are a thing of the past......lol, yeah right.

im sorry but this is the dumest sega idea ever

going and saveing on to the server....haha you know there is still only 4 people to a dam room i mean what is up with that

they are not using any new idea all the chat and group things have bin in other mmorpg for years and now there taking a game that is mostly consle hence 4 players a room........4 controlers......see a patern

its nothing new they needed to make a actual game field and not us the dam maps that have bin around for more then 5 years.....i was playing the import back then and that is why so many people play ep3 cuz its a totally new look and feel.i mean if your that hard core legit pso player that you would get the fastest pc you could to play it....no i think that most of the pso people would not...

plus if i wanter this style i would play it on FFXI were it is really a mmorpg and it was on a consol as well---sega and sonic team come on man you can do better

Well.....I do hate cheaters but i do know some people on Xbox PSO that don't cheat so I don't care about that unless they aren't on then I have to deal with cheaters, but only in ULT where they still suck even if they are cheating. I AM a hardcore PSO gamer and the ONLY way I'll buy this game is if the subcription price is cheap, like $5 a month for example, and if it supports a controller (because I am more of a console gamer and I have a nice controller for PC. PSO is old, they better make promises of new weapons, tournaments, areas, and enemies before this one even becomes half a success.

Its not that simple you know.

If SEGA were to do that, the difficulty of the game will have to be changed to compensate. They could implement a difficulty system like Diablo II's but still... not sure if this is the type of game that is meant to be more than 4. Also you must think about the lag throughout the game if there were that many people.

I personaly see this as a vast improvement. this way no more cheating is alowed. and who says us whont see it? they used to say america would never get ff11 but look we got it. and the offline mode was removed to keep people from hacking.

for all you people who apperntly dont understand what made PSO a enjoyable game in the first place. as for it being a MMORPG its better its not , mmorpgs for example normaly have lackluster and poorly interactive combat, feel free to tell me otherwise im really looking forward to a decent responce on that. severside saving removes offline which is kinda strange but it to compensate they will make the offline content more adapted online, single player could now have a multi player aspect. so for all you people who are insulting some one elses work before thinking about how its a improvment over the past works, and honnestly if you think PSO SHOULD BE a mmorpg then you dont udnerstand the combat forced on you by a room by room system. this is more of a rant then a post but its time some one said some thing logical on this.

when FORCED to fight in a room to progress gives the games simple combat a complex outlook, who evers done cmode understands the enjoyment of FIGHTING with items that arent overly powerfull.

if you require godlike items to play then leave pso or try harder. and for the sake of sanity dont use ramarl/mars and hunews in cmode and claim to be great. it makes the rest of the english players look stupid.

True, but they dont have to have lackluster combat. There is no reason why a new PSO could not be both, an amazing MMORPG and still retain the elements of what makes PSO so addictive and fun to play. I suppose if someone did manage to pull this off, they would be credited for creating the best online game ever.

I am anonymous because I am not going to BOTHER loging in.

#1 they are riding the same one trick pony with little improvement

#2 we have been waiting on a TRUE thrid game for too long.. I don't count that yu-gi-oh garbage as PSO!

      #3 I like playing offline.

PSO needs to just move to allow players to play singleplayer and have a host that works like Diablo II through tcp-ip. Having the BIG server pure like diablo.

They ALSO need bigger areas and support for more then 4 people. I play in a group of 12 and we don't play games if everyone can't play. so we end up playing fps games much to my frustration.

Single player is where I play this game the most taking it away really ticks me off. It will stop cheaters in the same way a not-updated antivirus can stop viri. It will work until someone once again finds the ploit to get through.

      PFFFFFFFFFT!

This might end up being a good and a bad thing. its good that ST has taken extra measures to make sure people dont cheat. and how can people dislike online mode. only thing. what if you wanna get some single player training. you know? just go hunting for some rare boxes, or blowing off some steam. the only time you'll be by youself is like 2 in the morning during weekdays. also, players will probably dislike being forced to pay this constant fee. but i like how the command list has been expanded to 10 slots, at least thats what i can tell from the screenshots. hope we get a US version.

Yes it sucks this isnt a NEW PSO.

What is good is that they are trying their best to get rid of the cheating scum that ruined this game.

The only people that are complaining about server-side saving and not being able to play offline and the very people that ruined the game in the first place, ie the cheaters.

This is Phantasy Star ONLINE it should never have been offline.
