• Phantasy Star Online 2 Servers Will Not Be Linked

Japanese gaming website 4gamer.net recently interviewed Satoshi Sakai, producer for the Phantasy Star Online series. In the interview, Sakai talks about the creation of Phantasy Star Online 2, future updates, and the regional servers. In particular, he mentioned the North American/European servers will not be linked to the Japanese servers.

This turn of events will surely come as a disappointment to those that were expecting globaly linked servers.

Everything about the handling of previous games, and the downsizing of the various SEGA branches are facts; disagreeing with them, whether politely or stupidly aggresive like that other guy, won't change them one bit. My assessment of how PSO2W is going to be handled is simply a logical progression from those facts. If anyone knows any other facts that would cancel or counter them, I'd like to hear them. Hope alone didn't help PSO:BB or PSUW.

I didnt try and change your OPINION at all... i just put my opinion on the table. I really dont care what u think that SoA will do to PSO2, but i will still play it. no matter what you try to say to downsize them.

I'm "trying to say to downsize them?" I'm not trying anything, SEGA itself is doing it! "Downsizing" means they're firing people. A simple Google search will show you all of the recent layoffs in the US, Europe, and Australia branches. A deeper one will find you last year's layoffs, and the closing of Sonic Team West some years back. Again, these are things that have happened, not "opinions."

Well there you have it folks, all hope is dead and BanF killed it. I’ll still be delusional and give the west servers a shot, but I guess the rest of you better not waste your time like me and just play on the Japanese servers with BanF. It’s the only logical conclusion.

It WILL be the only logical solution when they close the server 2 years down the road due to history repeating itself.
I'll play both, but they're not getting a dime from me until they put forth the effort to give half a s*** about people across the pond.

You know... if they don't give a crap and end up closing the western servers is because of YOU, who don't give a crap about 'em in the first place and aren't willing to give them the slightest chance. Supply and demand. If there's no demand, forget about supply. That's why PSU went under in the first place!

Sheesh... and I though Sonic fans were whiners...

Nope. Sonic fans are nothing compared to MMO fans who dont know how to keep their servers up and going. (hint, hint) (wink, wink)

Actually, downsizing means to make something smaller. It can be inferred as talking about someone to make them look bad so there not needed or as you said it, making a company smaller. My meaning was the first one, as in "i'm still going to play on the western servers no matter how bad you downsize (making someone look bad) them." Your meaning was correct too, but you need to understand the meaning of the word fully, OK.

To be honest - I just want to play it even If I where to play alone or split screen with friends (assuming sega will do the right thing like they did with Episodes 1+2 and put em on Xbox Live).

Remnants, my point about downsizing is that if a bigger SEGA failed to properly handle the previous games, I don't see how a smaller one can do a better job. Now, if SEGA were to announce something like "SoA is no longer going to do anything BUT handle PSO2W" then that would give me hope they'll do it right this time, but nothing of the sort has been announced or even hinted at.

As for the JP servers, Revy, I don't play in them, not for PSO2, not for PSU, and not for PSO:BB while it lived. However if you read around all PS forums, you will see a lot of people have already gone to PSOJ. Come PSOW, those people will have at least six months' worth of character development that many if not most will be loathe to give up, and with reason. Some will also play on the Western servers, but it's unlikely they all will, to say nothing of abandoning PSOJ altogether and moving to PSOW. That translates in a net loss of player base for PSOW even before it comes out, and if SEGA mishandles the game it will only get worse.

It's a downright grim picture for PSOW, but it's all SEGA's fault, and they keep making the same mistakes. If PSOW fails it's not because PS fans "dont know how to keep their servers up and going," it's because enough of us got tired of how SEGA mishandles the games. Game being free won't make up for lack of content and an abundance of scammers, glitchers, cheaters and hackers.

I've seen private Ragnarok Online being run better than any Phantasy Star official server. Being a server admin isn't the same as making the game. Until the game comes out, predictions are predictions.

And I keep my stand. If people show interest and actually give the game a chance, the thing won't die.

There are going to be people who scam you for your money or items, people who abuse bugs in the game, and people who use bots and hacks to level up faster or get money in what ever game and server you play on. it doesnt matter if its a japan server or not, people are going to do those things. just because you cant understand what they're saying, i bet you they're scamming someone for their items while you think they're trading. its just a matter of common since whether you go with it or not. And glitching, hacking, and cheating, thats just a common thing in all mmorpgs. so just because the admins cant stop all of them, doesnt mean they havent stopped some of them.

      AMEN!

Most MMORPG issues have the same cause as most PC issues. A lil' component placed between the chair and the keyboard.

I'm kinda happy with that, Japanese people aren't that great with English (well, some are.). And most Western people can't read Hiragana/Katakana. It's nothing bad with it, EU & NA people can talk English with each other. We wouldn't get confused if we were talking English with each other. Sure, I'm from Sweden but that doesn't matter, since I can talk English. If you're not okay with this then just stay on the JP servers.
Besides, wouldn't it be easier to make Teams and Parties if we can understand each other and create tactics?
SEGA isn't doing anything wrong with this. They are probably just having those points in mind.
If a JP person targets an enemy and says how to go around him, we wouldn't understand.
If we did on a EU/NA server, we would understand.
      Do you get me?

      ^This.

Let's face it, western people who actually know japanese are a minority. An even smaller minority is japs who know english decently. And no, engRish doesn't count.

Well, glad to see some things never change, endless bickering, arguing opinions and such. Good times ^.-
Now for my 2 cents: First off to anyone telling those that are claiming "PSO2 is dead before it starts" to "be happy we got it at all", try to keep in mind that most if not all of us have been following this game since it was announced, and watched SEGA do the same old crap they always do by implying they were going to do one thing using minimal information (I.E. "Global support") and delivering something completely different. It's no real surprise to anyone, but we were hoping they would break their own track record and actually cater to ALL of their fans.
As for the whole "Stop comparing to PSU, it's a different game!"... We know that, and you're completely missing the points that everyone who is using past track records on SEGA's part and actual facts to prove that there is an incredibly high chance of PSO2 making the same mistakes that PSU did based on how it was handled. Fact: PSU went for months at times with no new content due to SoJ not releasing it to SoA. Fact: They did not maintain their servers properly. Fact: They did not employ nearly enough GM's to help moderate the game. Fact: Their support system for any bugs, glitches, cheating, scamming ect ect.. was utter crap.
Based on these facts, most players are not willing to give PSO2w a chance, since as others have stated (for months now), SEGA needs to show us that they are taking steps to better improve these faults instead of putting the game in a position to make the exact same mistakes they have made repeatedly over the last 10+ years. I haven't seen anyone saying that the game is going to suck, but simply pointing out everything I just said (though not nearly as long winded).
