If you are looking for pals, which it sounds like you are, try doing a few heat swords. Use the trick when the 5 rappys fall.(the 5 rappys are not always in the quest but they are there good % of the time.)

how long does it normally take until it works?

I'm interested as well I tried it a few times, going up and down to town to respawn Rappy's but never got it to work. How long does it usually take?
