I keep failing at the "checking for file updates" part.

Everything's normal here. Have you run through the usual procedures (reboot, reinstall, etc.)?

Yeah, that could be problematic, then.
So...

I'm pretty sure PSU doesn't use the HDD. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_mad.gif

You have to keep retrying. It'll let you through after a couple of attempts. It's nothing wrong on your end.
