View Full Version : Lensflares are Sexist!

Okay, let's see if anyone else is paying attention to this. I'm playing a female character, my wife plays a male character. Wherever I go, I seem to have lensflares following me, as though Sega set them up to stalk lolis or something. Her character, on the other hand, gets no lensflare love. She has been constantly cajoling, begging, bribing the game, etc., but still there have been no lensflares escorted by magical happy Rappys or anything like that.

So I ask you, has anyone else seen this fragrant display of lensflare chauvinism, or is it just us?

You mean the luck thing next to our name? It is somewhat sexist, but male do get better stats across most of the classes... so I don't mind.

It's not that. Here's what he means:

And here:

Notice the lens flare in the background of the second that is absent in the first? His character seems to get it all the time. It's not a case of graphics cards, mind...I'm the one with the better card and faster system, while his is on the lowest settings.

But I at least get all the Rappy love. XD

Well, yeah, I have mentioned it to her about that Rappy stalking thing, but she's been getting on my case about the damn lensflares following me all over the place. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif

If you are on different computers, then there you go, graphics problem on Hadyn's computer.

But Hadyn's on the better computer with a better graphics card... *scratches head*

I experience those aplenty on 360, so I dont think it's a processing problem, I always assumed it was supposed to be there. That's rather odd, but I think it's generally just the fault of the camera angle at the time they show up on the screen (as I've never really had them pop up/be in my way during fighting, only while looking around with the cam).

Why don't you guys put the graphic setting to the same and see if there is any difference again?

Because she's playing on HIGHER settings. By reason, she should be getting a lot more graphics fun out of the system than I should. My computer simply can't match her specs, which is why I have mine running lower.

For example, note that Haydn's screen (hers) is at higher resolution than Shizuka's (mine). Because her card can handle more, it should make sense that she should see not only lensflares, but other stuff as well (I, on the other hand, see squares instead of butterflies and dragonflies and my system still artifacts quite a bit).

Yet lensflares are coming out perfectly on my computer and not on hers. Even more so, when playing my male ranger, the lensflares disappear. This is why I'm wondering if it's a matter of gender orientation and not tied to graphic performance, per se.

It is most likely graphic problem.

If you can't put on higher setting, why not lower? I am pretty sure it is computer resource problem; such as when there are too many things on the screen, the program automatically choose a less important object to remove. Ever see tech effect disappearing when there are too many mobs and party members?

It is more likely to have something missing in high setting than lower setting.

hmm, it may be a height/angle thing, maybe a character is different in height and blocking the flare, also compare settings, maybe one setting is inadvertently off where it should be on?

No, because we've tried it in different locations with different clothing and height variations. I'm just going to chalk it up to the weirdness that is ST. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

It's gotta be something with the settings. Post-effects, graphics, something, maybe?

my mains a Female and i get lensflare http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
but it could be a number of things, her being on a superior spec don't really mean nothing, graphic drivers, driver settings, ingame settings all need to be taken account for.

OK, have to get this out...

Better computer does not mean better graphics! Lol, I know it SHOULD but it doesn't. Different cards support different types of software/effects like antialiasing or particle effects. One card could be set to decide what settings to use, while the other could be letting the program decide. Thats just one example, the list goes on and on... Hell, Windows alone could double the possibilities!

I would recommend checking the card settings for graphics control, try updating drivers etc. But its definately a computer thing, both my male and female char have flare on 360. Can you log onto your spouse's char from your computer and try it? (Not sure how the verification works for the PC)

Everytime I read something like that, it remind me how upset I was when I found out my dual core is working like crap comparing to a 4 years older PC.

This is probably the most confusing thing I've seen, O_o?!?!?!?

If you two were on PC version I would say because someone has the details on high while the other has it on low.

Or maybe it's just bad programming on Sega's side.

Why's that?

Hahaha.. Oh man.

ST is so sexist about all the OTHER aspects of the game, why not lensflares? Makes perfect sense to me that they feel girls should be all sparkly all the time. XD

dumb, dumb, dumb. this thread is dumb. it is sooo obviously the fact that you have different pc's and different gfx cards and different settings is causing that to happen. omg it only happens to guys. your one example has shown us the light. 1 out of 10,000....

If it's dumb, then why'd you feel the need to comment in it? Or do you feel compelled to parlay a failing wit into what is otherwise a minor and somewhat amusing thread?

Please comport yourself with better compunction next time. People will appreciate that. Kthxbai.

Okay, maybe I should make this clear.

For starters, I put the thread up because I genuinely wanted to know whether it was the result of the systems or if it was (as I suspected) "gender functions", similar to the variances in animations.

That being said, I'm quite aware that newer, faster does not always equal greater. My wife's using a computer that I hand-built a year ago as a graphics workstation for her job. I, OTOH, am using a four-year-old Dell laptop upon which I'm somewhat surprised still falls within the specs for the game, even though I've had to dial down the settings to the lowest.

In the end, it really doesn't matter whether it's just a graphics issue or whether ST feels only girl charas look purtyer with lensflares, it's just one of those oddball questions that came up prior to the oddball question thread.

I noticed when I turn on "compressed textures", the lens flare ceases to exist.

Parn
Jan 28, 2007, 06:02 PM
If you have your detail level effects set to medium, you will see the lens flare all the time wherever they are supposed to show up. If you have it set to high, it will also show up... until you switch planets.

As an example, if you start up the game and are already on Moatoob, then the lens flare will appear in Moatoob stages where appropriate. If you switch to Parum, the Colony or Neudaiz, the lens flare will no longer show for the rest of the time you're logged in.
