Since tomorrow is the launch date for Windows Vista to consumers and some of you may have gotten your hands on it (business license, MSDN, etc.), I've decided to make a quick guide on how to get PSU running once Vista is installed. I know this is gonna end up in the Technical Support forum, but I believe it's important enough to be in the General forum since if I was someone who upgraded to Vista and saw PSU was not working, I would look here (and probably ask) first. Mods, feel free to move this, but I suggest waiting a bit before you do. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Assuming you have no problems after your installation of Vista (i.e. incompatible graphic cards and sound drivers, etc.), you may find that PSU will do one of three things when you try to run it straight off the bat.

1) The "online.exe" program will refuse to load.
2) The "online.exe" program loads, but once you click "Network Mode", nothing happens or your video ends up being distorted.
3) You'll have trouble with GameGuard working.

Follow these steps to get Vista working. This assumes you have administrative access to your computer - if not, then go bug your IT professional/mommy/daddy who installed Vista and made your account a user account.

1) Log in as an account with administrator privileges OR obtain the account name and password for an account with administrative privleges.

2) Install DirectX 9.0c runtime for Windows Vista. This is necessary because PSU requires certain components of 9.0c that apparently 10 doesn't have. You can go to the Microsoft site (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=013C0F78-3C9B-44DC-B8BE-46783BCAC3CB&displaylang=en) to download it or find it yourself via Google. It's not hard to find. Here's a hint, get the filename from the Microsoft site and Google it, you should be able to download it from elsewhere. Restart your computer when you're instructed to do so.

3) Go to where your PSU is installed. The default location is C:Program FilesSegaPhantasy Star Universe

4) Right click on online.exe and choose Properties.

5) Click on the Compatibility tab and check the checkbox that says "Run in compatibility mode for:"

6) Open up the drop-down box and choose Windows XP Service Pack 2.

7) Repeat steps 4-6 for for option.exe, psu.exe, and psuoff.exe. This step is probably not necessary, but it's a good idea to do it anyway.

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_cool.gif a) If you're logged in as administrator, simply double click online.exe to run it.
b) If you're logged in as a regular user, run online.exe and see if it works. Click on Network Mode and see if that works.
c) If it doesn't work, quit back to Vista and right click online.exe and choose "Run program as administrator" and input the administrator account and password to get it to run.

I also suggest turning off Windows Firewall and User Account Protection. They may not be necessary to disable, but the Firewall is unneeded if you have a router and UAP is a poorly implemented pain in the ass.

Let me know if this works for you. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I've Vista 64-bit edition, and I tried to install DirectX9.0c, but it never asked for a reboot. The dxdiag kept reporting DirectX10 even after I did go ahead and reboot.

However, there's good news! Seems that on Vista 64-bit, PSU can run using only the compatibility mode settings! I'm patching as I type this. ^-^

It's a Runtime - it does not replace your original DirectX 10, it just adds stuff from the previous DirectX 9.0c alongside 10. If you find that PSu can run "using only the compatibility mode settings" this is probably because you're logged in as administrator, so you don't have to follow the steps to run it as admin.

But by installing DirectX 9.0c you saved yourself the problem I had where PSU refused to load after the initial "main menu" (Story Mode/Network Mode/Options, etc.). This will also allow you to play some older games that may require these components. All in all, I think the 9.0c Runtime is a mandatory install for those who wish to play games at the moment, only because there aren't any games immediately available to buy that support DX10.
