Some people thought it would never happen (myself included); another Wu-Tang album. As their solo careers have pulled them each in different directions, it has seemed less and less likely that we'd ever see them form like Voltron ever again. But as we've reported, they're taking it back to the beginning with Steve Rifkind.
Rifkind, founder of Loud Records, helped launch the legendary group in 1993 with their classic debut. Now he looks make waves with them 14 years later with his new label SRC/Universal. "This is the perfect time for us to come back, the stars are aligned," stated RZA. "It's like when we first started with Steve. We put out real hip-hop at a time when it was turning into pop or R&B. We brought the focus back to the music in its rawest form, without studio polish or radio hooks."
"The energy is just like it was, and it's needed in our industry same as back then," adds Rifkind. "Over the last few years, the group has developed a whole new fan base from the new generation of hip hop fans that never even seen them play."
Album number 5, and their first since 2001's disappointing Iron Flag, will be called 8 Diagrams. To no surprise, the title is a Kung Fu reference.
There will be an Ol' Dirty verse on the album, but a single verse from the late maniac emcee surely isn't going to fill the void that he has left. The album is slated for a summer '07 release, and word is that the album is about half recorded at this point.
"People want something that gives them an adrenaline rush, we're here to supply that fix. How could hip-hop be dead if Wu-Tang is forever?" RZA asks. In the meantime, look out for the Afro Samurai OST on Koch, produced entirely by The RZA, it drops January 30th.

Former A Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-Tip has been quiet for too long, but 2007 should put an end to all that. Tip is gearing up for a pair of solo albums this year, leading with his Universal Motown release of The Renaissance.
You can expect another change in sound from Q-Tip, as he recorded the album with a “hip-hop band.” \"I wanted a hip-hop sonic feel, something pure to the sound of hip-hop with real drums, real emotion and people taking solos,\" he told Billboard. \"In that sense this record feels like we\'re moving in a new direction ... something hip-hop should do.\"
While it’s a safe bet that the album wasn’t complete, September saw a mysterious Tip album called Open leak on the Internet. Clearly backed by a band and featuring Andre 3000, Common and D’Angelo – the very same guests slated to appear on The Renaissance – it seems as if the cat is out of the bag.
Speaking of leaked, yet-to-be-released albums, his shelved 2001 album Kamaal The Abstract will get an official release this year, equipped with some bonus tracks. No release date for either has been given yet.

BET is set to honor Black History Month, in a way that only BET can.
Kicking off its programming will be a series of documentaries for Hip Hop History Weekend and the 25 Events that (Mis) Shaped Black America .
Tupac: Thug Angel is the first documentary set to air. The program covers the late emcees life through the eyes of friends, scholars and artists he worked with. Pac’s legacy will further be explored. Angel airs Friday, Feb. 23 at 8 pm .
The origins of the emcee get showcased next in The MC: This is Why We Do It, which airs Saturday, Feb. 24.
No Hip Hop history weekend would be complete without examining Hip Hop’s ever evolving role with the police gets the once over in Black & Blue: Legends of the Hip Hop Cop. New York ’s rapper profiling practices get put on blast. Black and Blue airs Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 pm .
Rounding out Hip Hop History Weekend is The Art of 16 Bars (pay attention, aspiring emcees). This documentary shares the writing and freestyling techniques of some of the game’s biggest. Bars will air Feb. 25 at 3 pm .
Hot off the heels of last year’s Worst Moments in Black History, Paul “I no longer use the N word” Mooney is back with the 25 Events That (Mis) Shaped Black America . Commentary from cultural critics, comedians and others takes an intelligent look at several missteps in Black History.
Gotta love BET’s unique celebration of Black History Month.

(Finally, decent programming on BET!)
