If there are mass bannings, it would explain the current lack of players online.

Although, that is more likely due to the fact that the server crashes just make people call it quits for the night (like me!)

This is actually a pretty good reason to quit a game. If the servers can't hold the amount of people they're meant to hold, then something has to be wrong. The fact that servers that are meant to hold a certain amount of people are crashing when it's only 50% full means that something is wrong.

As long as the bum don't crowd Uni15 and ruin it with their stupidity I don't mind a server crash every now and then. XD It happens. Although maybe ST should consider lowering the maximum amout of players on a server, or something like that?

Universe 2 has held up fine at max, it's only today that they began crashing. Of course a crash or two would seem like nothing, but the amount of crashes and the timeframe between each crash is suspicious. It's more than likely someone was deliberately crashing the universes everyone was migrating to.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the JP playerbase would suddenly be exposed to all the US "hax" and such. The outcry from Sonic Team's true customers would force them to deal with the GameGuard issue and cost more money than they're willing to spend.

Feb 7, 2007, 12:23 PM
It has nothing to do with the amount of people on the server. 90% of everyone crowded on a single universe for 3 months, and not once did we see this happen.

It's quite obviously an attack by Hackers. I'm betting that Sega won't stand for this for very long. Maybe they'll get some decent security?

It's hard enough to find a party that I like. Having everyone spread out would make it even harder. I'd much rather having everyone in one place so I have a better chance of getting the party I want.

...has it occured to anyone that ST may just be having an issue with their servers, like when the room server went down? It seems more likely than a hacker attack to me.

HUnewearl_Meira
Feb 7, 2007, 02:56 PM
At this point, I submit that it could be either wear on the servers or a hacker attack. Every time a universe went down, it had two and a half stars, which suggests to me that the third star may be that magical event that could have been crashing a worn out piece of hardware. I don't know what sort of system they're using, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the same servers once housed an iteration of Phantasy Star Online.

It's also entirely possible that a hacker with a port sniffer figured out the IPs and port numbers of individual universes, and started spamming them with useless data, to the end result of halting its ability to communicate to PSU clients. It's worth noting that if it WAS a hacker, then he was probably hanging out by one of those universe-hopping cubes in a fairly remote place, so he could see for himself which universe was becoming popular.

If someone was intentionally bringing down servers, isn't that a crime?

Sinue_v2
Feb 7, 2007, 04:40 PM
Yes, it is.

As for the servers acting wacky yesterday - here is a possible explanation. Apperantly there was a pretty massive and sophisticated Denial of Service attack on 3 of the key 13 root servers which pertty much manage the whole internet. Largest one since 2002. While none of the servers went down, they were "browned out" and basically unusable. Most people didn't notice, but it did cause quite a bit of slowdown for many users - as well as some server problems for some corperations. The attacks are thought to have originated in South Korea.

Universes have gone down before, for various reasons, but with the way they went down yesterday it seems likely to me that this is at least a plausable scenario.

The problem with this scenario is that the domain name server attacks happened several hours (10 to 12?) before the PSU servers started going down. Also, an attack on the domain name servers shouldn't have had the effects that were seen last night. If Sega or its users were having problems with domain names, the problem should have been apparent at logon time.

DNS wouldn't have affected online games at all, as they dont use domain names.

But if someone attacked the internet root servers, you can expect massive international retaliation.

Though, since you said it was fairly sophisticated, I'm going to assume there was a complex network of hacked computers that'll be a pain for invesitgators...

in away i feel this is getting really bad since people in this game will bitch and quit over the tiniest thing even if its funny. "arrgh too many people are going on one server and they are crashing" *quits PSU* now im worried

This is actually a pretty good reason to quit a game. If the servers can't hold the amount of people they're meant to hold, then something has to be wrong. The fact that servers that are meant to hold a certain amount of people are crashing when it's only 50% full means that something is wrong.

Whats sad is these servers hold as much as the Runescape servers, but they got like 130 of em or so AND the PSU servers are probably designed to hold oh around 3000 that or they're designe dto hold 1500 which would explain a lot as well. Basically ST doesn't know how to set up server clusters...its...sad...really...really...sad

On JP PSU, Room Severs crash atleast once a day. As for a universe crashing? It almost never happens. I would say that things will get ugly if ST does not get a fix.
Maybe things will restore on thursday maintanence?

I hope Sonic Team is taking notes on this issue to code the game more efficiently and not rely on Gameguard~nyo.

If this is, indeed, a hacker attack, then it likely has very little to nothing to do with GameGuard. GameGuard defends the client software, not the server.
