maybe he means the gamegaurd patch that happened earlier today

It's a security update.

There's a news article on the front page (http://www.pso-world.com/article.php?sid=1667&mode=nested&order=0&thold=-1) about it. Keep in mind that anything patched on the Japanese Game Guard gets patched on the NA/EU Game Guard at the same time.

None of the above http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif I watched my roommate log in this evening on a different toon and he had a GAME PATCH upload. He has been playing all day on different toons and loaded the GG update this morning. This was a Patch File.

I played today and didn't download any patches. It is possible that if your friend hasn't played in a while, he/she may have had to download some patches from previous updates.
