To prevent flame wars and condensed spamming.
And also, they're locked when a thread gets out of hand, i.e. goes completely off topic, or turns into an argument battleground.
Does that answer your question? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

If, for any reason, a moderator decides that a topic needs to not be replied in again, then it will be locked. These reasons may include such things as:

Flaming has begun, with no clear sign of an end.
The thread has outlived its usefulness.
The thread has gotten incredibly off-topic.
The thread has been dormant for several weeks or more, and has been bumped.
The thread is in FKL, and a moderator has a whim to lock it.

There can be other reasons, too. That's the general sort of idea, though.

Maybe I should rephrase my question... what is the purpose of locking topics?

When a topic is locked, it can longer be replied to and existing posts cannot be edited. A topic is often locked for the purposes that Hunewearl_Meira cited.

I was going to say "Because God hates you", but you guys just had to put in a real answer.
