Super Mario Bros 2 should has been pretty similliar to Super Mario Bros only harder.

However i don't know SMB2, i only know the thing they sold in Europe as SMB2 which wasn't the original SMB2.

Just wanted to call him a liar from his link since you don't see his first one linked here.

Mario 2 was that other crazy game originally about some non Mario characters. I had it on NES. Luigi, Princess were also playable characters, Toad too probably. You picked up turnips to throw into enemies like giant Frogs, who are also kings.

Toad was definitely a playable character. He could pick vegetables/dig the fastest. Luigi could jump the highest, and the Princess could float for a few seconds at a time.

Also the game introduced the Shy Guys and Birdo; and flying carpet sections.

Actually that wasn't the real SMB2, it was a different game.
As far as i know Nintendo decided to make the game in to SMB2, because they thought the original SMB2 was to hard for western player, but they needed something to fill the place.
So they took a different game and changed the visuals.
The original SMB2 you can find on Super Mario All Stars (SNES) where it is called Lost Levels.

The game that was released in western market as SMB2 was original "Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic"
