I'm using one of the old models and my game freezes whenever I zone. Some games don't even read like God of War and Rogue Galaxy. Am I alone on this?

I think your machine is toast, Either get a slimline or a PS3. You can find PS3 anywhere. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Yeah, that means your PS2 is dying.

If you're getting Disc Read Errors, you may have to readjust the laser. I've had this happen to me at least 3 times so far and adjusting the laser fixed it every time. DRE's are a common problem with the older models.

DISCLAIMER: If you don't know what you're doing, do not attempt this at all. I'm not responsible if your PS2 stops working alltogether.

You'd have to open the PS2 up.

First you'd have to unscrew case,

then unscrew the top of the disc tray.

There should be a small white cog-looking disk with a hole near one of the spokes.

You'll have to plug the power in to open the disc tray. Unplug the PS2 once it's open.

Use a permanent marker to mark off where the hole is before turning it (so you can set it back to it's original position if it doesn't work). Then turn the cog clockwise a bit.

To see if that was good enough, put a disc in the tray and place the disc tray lid back on like this:

Plug the power back in and keep your hand on the lid. Put just ENOUGH pressure TO KEEP IT DOWN and turn the system on. If you don't put enough pressure, your disc will most likely fly out when it goes to read the disc, so I'd be careful.

If the games load fine, you're done. Just turn off the power and screw everything back in.

Of course, I wouldn't attempt this if you don't know what you're doing, but it's not as hard as it looks. And sorry if my explanation sucks.

If you do that

BE VERY CAREFUL OF THAT SILVER STRIP

When I took apart my old fat PS2, I knocked that strip out and it took me roughly 30-45 minutes trying to push it back INTO it's little slot. It's extremely frustrating and it'll make you scream. It's like trying to thread a needle in the dark, literally. It made me scream almost because it would never go in.

After a long effort, I finally got it back in. It's what connects the power supply to your "reset" button and your "open disc tray" button. If the silver strip gets knocked out, you're screwed nearly.

Please be careful if you decide that route.

its really not that hard....trust me, just carefully remove the top by pulling the top off while pushing it forwards on the top without all that much pressure. U cant possibly break it if ur carefull. And Sony will fix it even if the DREs come back for free, shipping and all, you just have to pay 4 the PS2 to the Sony company...at least they did that when I still had a big ps2, Ionno bout now tho. this problem was happening to me as well, but i had a clicking noise before my game would freeze. i opened up my ps2 and fixed the problem, and dont know how to do crap with computers/consoles. but my problem had nothing to do with the laser's positioning. The rails the laser runs on were excessvely covered in grease so I took a Q-Tip sprayed with WD40 and cleaned the junk off of the rails. I also had the inside of my ps2 air dusted (a can of pressurized air for keyboards should work fine). The laser posistioning (From what I hear) can be tricky. But its better than spending 200$ on a new ps2. I wish you luck. If I can open and fix a ps2, there is no doubt in my mind you should be able to do the same.

And p.s. (I'm not sure if this was mentioned before) by opening your ps2, you void its warranty. check and see if your warranty is over before opening it.
