Why does it matter if they're mainstream or not? A good movie is a good movie. Period.

Edit: Try Black Christmas if you haven't seen it yet. Not the remake. I haven't seen that, so it could suck for all I know. The original, however, is creepy as hell.

Romero's "Of the Dead" quadrilogy (Films in this group may or may not be considered mainstream. The public has usually heard of them but not seen them in my experience.)

I've never seen The Changeling, but the rest I can second without hesitation, especially Romero's Dead quadrilogy.

The Thing's special effects might seem outdated to some, but I'll take them over that ultra-slick CGI garbage any day.

Suspiria has a great atmosphere and use of color. The music adds a lot to the movie.

The first four I haven't seen, but I'd take The Lion King and The Little Mermaid over any of the Disney movies you mentioned. Or Lilo and Stitch, or Aladdin, or Toy Story, or The Incredibles, or etc.

I haven't opened the shrink wrap on my Hellsing boxset yet and picked up a used copy of Dave Chappelle's block party at a supermarket of all places so I can see what Talib Kweli was talking about in his Ms. Hill track - which also needs to get a playthrough in the DVD tray sooner rather than later.

Which means the advertisements on PSOW worked on me at least once now as they used to have a flash ad for Dave's movie up at the top.

Want to see some good horror films?

Then check out: The Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, The Evil Dead, The Blair Witch Project, 28 Days Later (really more of a drama film, but it's got plenty of horror), and/or The Descent.

I own 'em all on DVD, and have watched them multiple times. I've enjoyed each and every viewing, as well. Some are more scarier than the others (I'm looking at The Descent), but they're all worth seeing.
