right goza, you make the characters you want to play with the attributes you want. who are we to say what someone should do with their game characters stored on their memory cards.
and some people rp, let them, harms no one and it's fun for them. unless you're just all out there to find someone to hump, then that would be one of the few scenarios i can see where you'd actually be upset if someone wasn't their real sex based on a first meeting.

It's a set of characters. And your given a choice. Whatever choice you make doesn't really matter. The game is made to just have fun. Not for gender dispute.

I don't think people are weird for using characters of the opposite sex (although I still don't see how a robot can be male or female...), but if you think PSO is a dating service then I think you're a bit mistaken... I do think it's weird if you don't understand that the HUnewearl you're talking to online doesn't look like that in real life. There's nothing wrong with having a fantasy-relationship on an online game, but don't expect it to be a reality. This is one of the reasons why the voice-chat in PSO on the X-Box could ruin the game for a lot of people. They may have to come to terms that the cute RAcaseal they're fighting with is actually a 20 year old guy, like most of the people playing the game, and that people are there to have fun and play PSO-not find their life partner.

Gee, SOMEONE has missed the point of roleplaying!
I prefer to think of PSO as creating and directing characters in a story. Me in a dress would be hideous and wrong, and I shudder at the thought. However, as a writer or director, I can have female characters in my story, right?
Not that I go out and flirt with my Hunewearl. That would also be rather disturbing. But all my characters DO have backstories.
Really, if you're getting disturbed by it, you're probably getting a little too involved with that collection of pixels and polygons on the screen. I say let people play what they wanna play, and don't think too hard about who's at the controller on the other side. As long as you leave it all in the game, who cares?

Hello!
I like playing as guy hunters, but my mother pressures me every time I create a character to be a female. (It is a long, long private family matter behind that) Personally, I feel that everyone should do what they wish when creating a character. Some are more fun to play as than others. =)
Take care!

Ahhh.
There's a comic one of my friends on IRC linked me to one time that had me rolling on the floor, about this sort of thing. It's in Japanese, but it's pretty easy to figure out what's going on, I think, if you don't understand Japanese. Mostly 'cause one of the characters speaks English for most of it.

And the best part is, it's HAPPENED to me. Almost exactly like that. (I was the FOnewearl)

Hmm.... I can't see why you fail to see that PSO is an online Role Playing Game, hence the initial "RPG." Sure, if you don't want to, you don't have to, but you can't go and tell people what they should do. It's their game, they paid for it, with their money. As long as it's not corrupting your character files or anything, you have no authority over other people's play style. So don't stick your nose into their business unless you want it to be chopped off.
DarthWufei
12-06-2002, 06:23 PM
Zell, you're horribly closed minded and forget one major point. Most people on PSO DO NOT play the same way you do, or think of the game in the same way you do. So stop ranting over something so stupid.
From what you're saying. That you should RP the char like it should be. Then maybe you shouldn't take offense when you find out the girl character is a guy. Because... that's stepping out of the RP world. If you're trying to RP as well you have to realize how much you have to ignore the outside world. That's the whole point.
Basically, you're just being a hypocrite and I hope you realize your silly mindset before you find yourself being teased for not liking certain types of people. Maybe even hating certain types of people. That in turn may not even be true about people, but people like to think what they want. So be careful.

Let's run over a few things here:
PSO is what is called a "Role Playing Game," meaning the player plays the role of the character under his or her control.
There are no restrictions on which character classes you can choose from (the ones that are in the game anyway).
Anyone who thinks that every female character has to have a female player behind the controller is a fool. Why? Because if they intended to do that, there would be an equal class of every gender. But you don't see a female hunter with the exact same stats as a male hunter, do you?
Anyone foolish enough to "like" a female character in the game and then discovers that there's a guy behind the controller deserves that kind of humiliation.
It's not "wrong" to make a character of a different gender than your own. That's just as "wrong" as making a character that somebody else doesn't like.
Thinking yourself high and mighty above others by telling them what classes they should and should not choose only begets people thinking lower of you, so quite trying (and miserably failing) to make people do what you say, you'll only get insults.
People can choose whatever characters they want, and act how they want, there's nothing stopping them (except the server rules, of course).

I get confused for a female on a regular basis, but considering my nick and my penchant for using female avatars, that's pretty understandable. The thing is, I never pretend I'm not a guy. If anyone mistakes me for a girl I make sure they know I'm not.
I'm not in the game to pick up or mess with anyone's head. I'm in the game to have fun. It's a game, not a singles bar, though, and it is and always has been a truism on the net--never assume anyone is what they appear to be, unless you know them outside the web.
It's not always dangerous to make friends people you meet online, but it's usually safer not to try to meet a significant other over the net. People act differently online, freed from the constraints of physical impressions, and making any assumptions is, and always has been, somewhat risky over the net.
Always remember that, and you should be able to avoid getting hurt, whether by a REAL woman or someone who uses one as an avatar.

That is damn hilarious. Makes me imagine a RAcaseal with a moustache or something.
Anyway, yeah, this whole thread kind of put me off. The person who started it reminds me of the sort of folk who would beat a cross dresser in real life, because they think it's "wrong". Whatever. Go back half a century and get your jollies there.
Besides, when I join games, people often ask, "are you really a girl?" I do answer "yes", as that's the truth, and that's that. It doesn't hurt to be smart and voice your curiosities if you're easily offended.
EDIT: Oh, and on the Dreamcast, I had a RAmar called Raz Masters. So there.

anyway, let the people be who they want to be, personally i think being a FOnewreal is the funnest character of all. If you don't like it, then don't play. It's going to happen weather someone disagrees or not unless the team made it so that when you sign up for a pso account or something and you put in MALE for account that they'd only give you the option to pick male characters. Which would be the stupidest thing to ever come over gaming in my opinion.

Yeah that's right, my parents beat me with chicken wire every night before I went to bed before waking me up at 3 AM and making me walk the dog in a snowy mine field where midgets would constantly beat me with clubs. And that's exactly the reason I play a HUnewearl now.
http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif
I mean honestly. I play two other male characters, but for me the hune has the best advantages of any of the other hunters. I'm not going to be forced to play a male just because I'm a guy. And I'm completely comfortable with who I play, if someone else has a problem with it then there must be something wrong with them. Because they lost touch with the reality that this is an online Role Playing Game loooong ago.
And I don't try to give people any misconceptions. If they try to flirt with me or whatever I quickly let them know I'm a guy, and if they ask me I let them know I'm a guy. In the same respect I don't play online with any preconceptions about the player behind the character. I'm not playing PSO to try to trap any guy slaves to lock up in my basement and make pleasure me.

Making opposite sex characters is fine, but pretending to be that gender is creepy. Don't.
I have 2 male characters and 2 female. I never really roleplayed though, I would just talk like normal. The thing is I would never tell anyone what my real gender was. This is all past-tense because it was back in the DC days, I haven't been online with the GC version yet.

I play mostly male characters on PSO depsite the fact I am female. It's because, like someone else mentioned, they look cooler usually. Also, most guys on PSO are dense enough to believe evey male character MUST be a male player in real life.
I never try to hide my gender from my fellow players, but often they won't bother to ask and just assume I'm male. One of my close friends on DC PSO was shocked to learn (after months of playing with my Ramar) that I was female. He was more embarrassed about the fact that he had shared very dirty jokes with me, and I him. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif He didn't feel betrayed, and actually thought it was all too funny. We still keep in touch via e-mail.
I did finally cave in and make one female character, a hucaseal. The reason was because one of the costumes for her is my two favorite colors, black and purple (yeah yeah, black isn't actually a color, meh.)
But seriously, if I had to play with only female characters I'd be pissed. If guys had to play with only male characters I'm sure they'd have gripes as well. That's a really stupid and close-minded idea, buddy, and you can keep it.

People play as what they want. It's not like they are going outside and running around dressed like the character. Everyone just has their preference for characters. Hell, I level up my girlfriend's FOmarl all the time and I don't care. By your logic, I shouldn't be able to play Metroid because Samus is a girl and girls can't play The Legend of Zelda because Link is a guy.

Funny how my very first post after lurking for a month on this forum doesn't even really have to do with the game itself.
Anyways, my two cents: There's nothing inherently wrong with playing opposite gendered characters. The game itself only treats it as a different set of statistics, and limitations on what you can wield/wear (Stag Cutlery, Love Heart, etc). Roleplaying a female character when you're male IRL should never matter, and visa versa. Its only when it crosses the line and players treat a character as the actual person, that it gets out of hand. Or, when others force their insecurities upon others by publically denouncing cross-gender PCs.
Actually, there's an interesting story to tell about all of this. I used to play a MUD, which is a MMORPG w/o the graphics. My main character was a female elf.. mainly because the MUD I played on I was to lead the elven clan, and I thought a feminine character was more befitting the role. I RP'd a female, but I made no secret that I was a guy IRL. It was very successful, and the clan became probably the most popular and powerful in the game. In the end, I ended up meeting my wife on this game, and we had initally met while I was playing that female character. I probably wouldn't have met her if I had refused to play the part of a female leader.
Moral of the story: No one cares if you're mature enough to separate real life from fantasy life. Saying you MUST play a certain gender in a pretend life which must mirror your real gender is quite close-minded.. and just closes you to opportunities that you might not realize is there.

chill out. you only made this topic cuz u prolly mistaked someone for a female. i have female characters cuz i like their stats. and if ppl want te roleplay, let them.

I see nothing wrong with dudes playing with Female chars (I personally don't but whatever). What I do see a problem with is dudes actually trying to be the female character... Throwing up random cats faces, typing "Keke or Teehee"... You know the kind. Good thing XB Live has voice chat http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I should try that someday: make a new account here, pose as the cutest girl ever to populate the earth, and see how long it takes for someone to give me a grand prize or some kind of freebie just because I act cute.
I once tried that while playing Minishuri... And I was given 100,000 meseta! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

The only thing sadder than guys complaining about guys playing with girl characters are the the guys who try to sexually advance on said characters. It's your own fault for getting obsessive over a bunch of polygons, retard. I bet you're one of the guys who'd stalk the shit out of my HUnewearl on DC "Can U meet mE IRL I LUv U" :shudders: Gross. You need help. Zell, you're pretty much an idiot. By you looking to a video game for a dateline, I'm guessing you haven't had a girlfriend, right? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif
Damn... I hate stupid people...

Somehow Zell thinks that character selection relates directly to sexual preferance. So does this mean that his ideal girl is an android? *points at his portrait*
Half the people I know only pick their chars to suit their fighting style...then they think about the roleplaying part when they go online.

there's perfectly nothing wrong with a dude playing female characters. I'm a dude, and I play 2 female characters. In my opinion, the females are better in the game, cause they can use some things that guys cant, which is really cool. They also have some of the best stats you can get on the game, which is also a plus too.

I agree, i have no problem being a male and using a female char (even if i only use a Hunewearl). What i really find disturbing though is when a male character uses the kat symbols and girl face and *ahem* certain other feminine parts.
Now that is very disturbing. Who agrees?

As you can see, students, it is not at all uncommon for the bowels of the human race to not only disregard proper grammar, but they despise the right to break the mold and be different as well. To them, the thought of an open mind is simply horrifying, and thus, they try their hardest to discourage it by any means possible. This can include everything from physical violence to -- as exhibited here -- a mind-numbing lack of literacy.
Please, try not to stare too much, as these types are easily alarmed and infuriated. Moving along...

what a childish discussion...
if you mind what RL-sex someone is, then ask.
if youre not comfortable with the character someone has chosen to (role-)play, then leave.
