Who knows, both a boy and a girl became NiGHTS, and they both appeared together to fight Wizeman. NiGHTS is a dream, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

It's actually been explained that NiGHTS has no gender. NiGHTS is a dream, and is preseaved as whatever the dreamer wants.
