A shame, but yeah it's understandable to accidentally overwrite another character if you aren't paying attention. I almost did that once....once, but caught myself at the confirmation. I guess they wanted to allow you to save your character at different spots and all, since offline, the slots are nothing more than space allocated for saves. Still makes for some easy overwriting. The only way to protect yourself from accidental overwrites is to copy your saves to another device. (Or the save file to another directory, on PC).
