Basically, one rule of thumb is that if someone is willing to give up a super hard to find rare, it's most likely a dupe.

.. Question analyzed. As of this writing, there are no specific ways to identify if an item has been duplicated. This unit recommends careful observation of the trader whom is trying to rid themselves of said item. If offers seem equal, item is likely unduped. If not, then the opposite is true. Again, there is no way to visually identify whether the item is a duplicate. That is why duplicating is so hard on trading economies..

Actually, no...
It does come down to common sense. If someone is willing to give up a very hard to obtain rare for something ordinary, that should raise a red flag right away. Anytime someone starts giving away high star level items is another indication. Then there's the real obvious case of a character who can't even equip a weapon trying to trade away a fully grinded one - To which they reply, "I traded for it." The only question there being, why would you trade for something if you can't even use it? The odds of the person having a character who can use the weapon only to switch it back and forth is... pretty damn low.
90%+ items that are duped - If you see one, assume a dupe:
DOUBLE CANNON (this should be 99.99%)
Photon Sphere
DARK FLOW
DARK METEOR
DARK BRIDGE
So, it is a "duh" question.

If you traded for a 9+ star item off of a person you just met (stranger) I can almost assure you it is duped (at least in ver.1 dc), but i dont know i havent played in a while =P

.. False statement.. 9-star rares were as common as Hanguns in Very Hard Ruins on Version 1.. Varista and DB's Sabers were constantly sold to merchants..

There is no differance between a found and a duped item. the items are the exact same thing so if you already have an item that u treaded for there is no telling but if you are trying to avoid trading for them just trade among ppl you know. but it is imposable to tell if an item was found or duped

Even at the byte level there are no unique markers to an item. There is no technical way to differentiate between legitimately earned items and duplicated items.
