I thought it meant - Am/I am, etc.

Such as -

Watashi wa baka desu

Translation:
I am an idiot.
Watashi being I and desu being am.. o.o I don't understand desu anymore @[email protected]

I always understood it as something like a period. Something formal, no doubt. Not usually used in casual speach.

desu is more like the 'am' of 'I am', since well... watashi wa already denotes the subject as yourself.

desu is a copula (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/copula), and has no meaning by itself.

I've always thought of desu being "it is"... depending on the sentence.

kireidesu, for example, means "It is pretty."

Though, "kirei" itself implies the same thing.

Mixfortune is probably most accurate in saying that it doesn't have an exact definition. It's mostly for being formal (when speaking Japanese)...

... As for English use, it's mostly used to sound utterly annoying by putting it at the end of everything you say.

Well I got to about episode 10 of 12 (season 1) and then just stopped. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

Shinku, this doll in red is the main protagonist.

While the fallen angel doll Suigintou is the antagonist of season 1.
