View Full Version : JP voices or US Voices?

whenever i hear JP PSU Video battle voices on Youtube...I find how LAME/boring the US battle voices are...(this must be a typical Otaku-ness syndrome from all the animes I've watched >.>)

if I'm going to compare the Voices between the two...I'd choose the JP voices anytime. (some people might find the JP voices annoying but it's much better and "cuter" and at least they say something more "Intelligent" http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif).
Like when a Caseal summons a SUV

are the US/EU players also have the same thoughts on it? or it's ok?

I wanted the ability to choose japanese voices... Fish girls sound so much more exotic when they have an exotic voice.

JP voices are so much better. They all actually have character. They say stuff. (What I have no idea. I don't speak Japanese. >.>;)

Each JP voice says different things, have different personalities almost. Ours are all pretty much the same thing, just sounds different.

I wish we could record our own voices for sound effects. I'd love to hear myself yell "Yaah~!" while attacking. n_n

Our grunts are fucking awesome, and the JP voices are pretty damn annoying. I got tired of my AoI beta character blabbering some incomprehensible nonsense every time I cast Diga after about an hour. I'd much rather hear maniacal laughter.

I'll bet most of the recorded Kias would sound like kitty whispers.

The US voices also happen to be the EU voices. Somehow I doubt a German or French player would appreciate their character belting out English phrases, I think.

In either case though, I don't think the very act of yelling out all those various phrases really translates very well to a Western audience. It comes off as campy more than anything else.

One thing that does bother me though a little is how the US/JP voices are actually mapped over each other, though. I think Shim had a topic in Gameplay about that...

As much as I think listening to my character yell 'Die!' or 'This ends here!' (or whatever crazy crap they'd say if they said stuff) would get irritating, the current US voices with their screams and grunts are nearly as bad.

Solution: Play a ranger. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Actually all my chars have too-deep voices. I made sure it sounded good in the US ver as that's what everyone hears, but I prefer voice 5 US to any of the JP voices. Saying stuff at SUV/nano is fun, saying stuff when casting, not so but I sorta blank it out with my force. All three of my male chars have voice 5 US, but they have voice 7 or 8 JP which is what I hear, it's too low for my liking but I live with it. When AoI is out I suspect it may come out on 360 in the west first, I'll import that version and play my chars with the voice I want them to have (voice 5 ftw).

However, I don't like how voice 5 grunts while casting either. So maybe I would still play my force with the japanese voice. I have a choice, it just means having to buy 2 copies of the damn game.

I want my Fortegunner to go "Pew Pew" when shooting my rifle or "KABOOM" when using my grenade launcher. Now I usually forget my character even has a voice until I get owned by some baddie.

Edit: Of course I want it said it Japanese goodness for increased hilarity.

Both groups have nice voices though overall, I only really like one from either of them. Kinda wish they'd just give us both sets. I kinda miss the voice I used during the AoI beta http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I'm really surprised anyone bothers to have a ranger. Their damage is relatively subpar, they share the ability to use traps, the share their ability to inflict status, they never hear their character's voice, and worst of all they have the same bullet animation that they had since lv1.

Or maybe I just don't like guns, it's one of those.

Off-topic in response to Zorafim: We do seem pretty dull, don't we...Lame bullet animations, No flashy shooting Photon arts, and out exculsives aren't exactly stellar. I just really like guns I guess. I also don't like getting hit, but that still happens too often.

Now that I think about it, I haven't even heard the JP battle voices yet. Off to Youtube!

They wouldnt nececcarily (ugh) keep saying the same thing if they blbered out something, if St had put alot of effort into this game, and give like 1000 phrases to each voice and blabber w/e phrase randomly, it wouldnt have probably been that annoying (1000 phrases would not be hard, 1000 when it comes to words and w/e is not alot at all, and wouldnt be bad at all if it was random).

Uh,just a thought. Maybe we should change the subject back to the topic.

I said before and I'll say it again.

I like the JP voices alot. I come from a background of playing 2-D fighters and bad kung fu movies.

Grunts and moans are one thing but to hear something engrish or even a cheesy phrase wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'd love to have JP voices on my characters,at least it sounds like they're attempting to fight rather than have back pains or something.

Then again I'm pretty picky out the voices I've picked. I'm fairly content with them but I could use a few phrases here and there.

I swear I must be the only one that wouldn't get tired of it.

I play alot of action games too,Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden have never said anything during combat that bothered me there either. Wait, wait no I'm one of those people that preffers subs to dubs on SOME animes.

Really it depends.

Like Outlaw Star. Sorry,I can't watch it in JP. The series seems too out of place for it. Same for Cowboy Bebop and Robotech/Macross. ( I lied about the later I can watch them in either but still.)

But things like KARAS and Jin Roh I have to watch in JP for some reason.

As I think about it,the US voices are fine,I just think it be nice to have that option.( to have JP voices I mean.)

In my case, it's not a preference of one language over another. It's the preference of the original language over a language they popped in later on. The game was obviously originally made in japanese, with english tagged on later. Because of that, they'd focus more on japanese voices than on english, alongside the fact that the visuals still haven't changed.

I swear, if the original language was Sweedish or some other random language, I'd still prefer to hear the original voices.

I'll take jp voices ftw Alex.

Exhibit A
"Have you seen a black car?" "I'm looking for someone driving a black car" "Do you know where I can find some sailors" "How bout a game of lucky hit?!" "How bout trying lucky hit?!"

Exhibit 2
I dare any one of you to try playing SoulCalibur 2 with the English voice actors for more than 10 minutes. If u think hearing Astaroth cornily screaming "Squirm" "Squirm" endlessly is excruciatingly painful, just wait until you face Raphael!!

(pulls up to the drive through)

"can I take your order sir?"

Yes I'll have my Shenmue 2 in European import flavors. And can I get that with a side order of SousCalibur2 voice option set to jpn plz?

"Yes sir you can. Would you like to order a drink so you can get the combo meal?"

OK sure. Can I get a Large Cherry Coke plz?

"I'm sorry we don't carry coca-cola products. We do have Wild Cherry Pepsi though. Would you like to try that instead?"

Nawh, that's alright. It's just not the same thing.

"Drive up to the next window."

Astaroth and Cervantes, at least in SC3 (I don't know if the same is true in SC2) are some of my favorite english voices. Knightmare was pretty nice too. It's the "normal" voices I couldn't stand (here's looking at you, Siegfried).
Regardless, I feel most fit a bit better in japanese (though they previously mentioned monsters felt alot worse, I'll admit)

I haven't heard any of the JP created chara voices, but it'd be nice if they let us use both. Maybe there'd be *two* voices I could stand per sex then instead of just one. Both my males use voice 5, just at different pitches, and it's a little redundant-sounding. And all the other voices sound either stupid or too little kid-y, even with the pitch lowered a ton. Lheighmhe.

Wasn't Siegfried done by Crispin Freeman in english? I thought it was fine personally. I'm well aware of how BAD it sounds, but I think after being exposed for it too long I've gotten used to it.

They yell "Irrashai" in a REAL bad accent. I don't mind it, but it was certainly something new being able to play the AoI beta with voices that didn't sound like crap. But I can imagine after hearing them say that in that weird accent over and over again it'd be kind of grating.

But yeah, JP voices here. This is your classic subs vs dubs debate, and it won't end here nor will it end in the next game that will be dubbed over by crappy American voice actors.

I hope Sonic Team puts in a dual language option like they did with Sonic Adventure.. or was it Adventure 2. Can't remember.

While it wouldn't bother me if the option was there for others, I personally would stick with the US/EU voices, for two reasons:
1. I find the act of announcing your actions to be ridiculious.
2. I can't stand not knowing what is being said, even if subtitles are present.
(Which also happens to be one of the reasons why I'll never be considered a "hardcore" anime fan.)

It was both actually, and unfortunately for some reason ever since Sonic heroes, they've taken out that option (from the gamecube version atleast)

Now i played with the JP voices, and yes i'm an anime fan, yes i'm also a Japanese culture....studier...(that doesn't make much since but i'll stick with it) Anyway The JP voices to me were better because they do get more than just grunts and groans, the phrases help (and i'll admit, when i played the JP version of PSU when i picked out my voice, i could understand what they were saying...)
And just because you speak english doesn't mean you can't listen to a voice track that isn't in english. I mean, what if ST really WAS lazy and never hired English Voice actors at all? You wouldn't have a choice BUT to play this game wiht voicing you couldn't understand.

Oh and i forgot who said it, but you can be a "hardcore anime fan" in your own right. like you need to prove anything to anyway.

I'll swallow the annoying and sometimes funny NA voices (death cries sound more like....well...-you know- ) and hope that we get offered a option to switch, however it would be too hard to implement across an online server AND too much to hope from ST since their trend is to only include the native language in their games.

I think the option to choose either should be available. The JP voices were already recorded, why not just throw them in as well for those who enjoy them?

Personally though, I would have just chosen the ENG voices because unless a certain phrase goes directly in line with what I would like my character to say, I don't think I would enjoy it. I imagine a few serious RP'ers wouldn't like their sweet, innocent Guardian screaming, "SUFFER! DIE!!" all the time.

Well, I wouldnt understand anything of the japanese jibberish so well..if I had to choose one I'd probably go with the english version. Maybe. I haven't heard much of/played the japanese PSU so if I were to compare them it wouldnt be accurate.

What I do know is that I wouldn't want them screaming the names of their attacks all the time (I can live with it if it's in a fighting game, but that's about it). A few random lines are ok, and I dont mind the actual speaking. But the same thing over and over again would get dull. I'd rather have the current grunts and screams them. Mix in a few lines among the grunts and it would be perfect though. Probably.

And the english voices in the storymode are annoying, with a few exceptions (Karen and Leo are ok).
