Ok so just to day i was going to play PSU because I haven't played it in a while. So when I start up the game GameGuard needed to update for about 5 updates, so I wait for it to update and it quickly finishes. I then procede to play extra mode and about 10 seconds into the game I get an error message that looks like this
"game and GameGuard have been modified"
then I get a message that says this-
"PsuOff.exe has encounterd a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the Inconvinence.
I need imediate help on how to fix this problem

Same thing is happening to me. I tried deleting the Gameguard folder and have it redownload it, but it still did the same message when I loaded PSU after. I'm reinstalling PSU right now, I'll tell you if that fixes it.
Edit: Nope, reinstalling doesn't help. This is getting bothersome.

well....you could switch to the PS2, we dont really have gameguard updates.

That would be a good idea... if I had a PS2 copy and if my PS2 could somehow use wireless. Can't start drilling holes in my walls to run an ethernet cable from my room to the router at the other end of the house.
I'm guessing Gameguard just messed up with their updates again, having a different patch on update server than what the verification server checks. Hopefully it's fixed by tomorrow.

Don't have a PS2, which is unfortunate.
but I'm going to try to uninstall and then reinstall both of the games i have on my computer and see if that dose anything and if that dosn't, I'm going to find the game guard websit and start asking questions.
and I agree with you, Criss it is starting to get very bothersome
But thanks for the help so far

Are you running on Windows Vista? My brother keeps getting the exact same error, and the game doesn't even start up on my SO's computer -- both of them have new computers that came with Vista. I also checked the official boards, and there are a number of other people having the same problem. However, it's not a problem with Vista: apparently, it's a bug in GG. (Wow, fancy that)
Someone else on the thread said it turned out to be GG having issues with his antivirus, but disabling it isn't a good idea.

no i'm not running vista, i'm running windows 2000 XP.
hopefuly GameGuard with fix it soon
I'll stop by the offical boards myself and see what I can find there.
thankyou Palefire for your help
ps. and I don't have a PS2 ither >.<, it sucks not having one.

Well, as was suggested in a similar thread, I removed my anti-virus (BitDefender), and that seems to have fixed the problem. My version of BitDefender was pretty much outdated so I didn't really care, but I can see that becoming a problem with people who don't really want to start running without anti-virus. Supposedly the new gameguard version doesn't work with a few select anti-viruses, and BitDefender seems to be one of those. Guess I'll have to go back to that system-resource-whore Norton.

BitDefender is also what my brother uses on both his tower and his laptop (which runs on XP). He tried disabling it this afternoon and he was still getting the error, so if it still doesn't run then, it could be more than just one argument between GG and other programmes.
This is why server-side anti-hack programmes (i.e., Punkbuster) > client-side anti-hack programmes (i.e., GG). But that's another rant for another day.

I actually uninstalled BitDefender, not simply disabled it. I don't think disabling it fixes the problem... you might want to try uninstalling it too.

PS2 > PC xD
Never mind that. An inside joke.
I would kill all the processes I know I could without killing my computer via Cntrl+Alt+Delete.

tryed killing all background processes without killing my computer and the anti-virus software I use is Ad-Aware SE Personal and AVG 7.5. Previous to the update I've been able to run PSU with no problems.
I uninstalled BattleFeild 2142 and then run PSU but still the message came up again. The only other things that I've installed lately are the EA Link ( and Electronic arts link to download games and such ), and the game Americas Army, but my older brother has Americas Army on his laptop and he is able to run PSU just fine. I think the problem may be in the EA Link but I can find a way to uninstall it, otherwise in the mean time I'll try uninstalling AVG and Ad-Aware SE and see what happens.
thanks for ya'lls help so far.
Edit: I just tryed it with the anti-virus uninstalled and it did not work. Now I'm definantly sure that it is the EA Link, but the only problem is that I can't find a way to uninstall the EA link.

That's what he ended up doing. He's trying out another anti-virus to see if GG throws a hissy fit over it. (He also got a script from someone to completely delete the GG rootkit so that the game can do a true clean install...even deleting the folder doesn't always do the trick)

Unfortunately, with the way things are right now, I don't blame you. Why pay for a game that you can't play? (Or in the case of some hackers, hack just to get in to the game they paid for...no duped Meseta, no S-rank grinded-to-10 weapons)

Here's a hope that they'll tag a fix along with the update tomorrow since I was actually looking forward to the event.

Ok i use Kaspersky Internet Security 7 (its a beta btw) and it never gave me any problems before. Before this cursed GG update everything was fine and peachy but now i cant seem to be able to run the game w/o getting the "game and GG were modified" message thing.
i uninstalled my antivirus and used the latest version, no deal. uninstalled PSU and reinstalled, no deal. Deleted the GG folder, no deal...
i REALLY dont want to choose between antivirus and PSU because i WILL choose antivirus...
if this thing doesnt get cleared up i might as well cancel my subscription because GameGuard CANNOT force you into using a specific product (my guess is that would be illegal even)
anyway lets hope for the best...

I've been hit by this issue too. Amidst all of "The game and GameGuard have been modified" error messages, has anyone else seen one that directs you to email "us" all your .erl files? Does anyone have that email address? I'm assuming it's GameGuard, but I can't get their Contact Us links to work on their website.
I'm at the end of my rope, too. It still doesn't work even without antivirus, and it's not as if I'd be willing to try that for more than five minutes, anyway.
As a longterm question, for those of you who are hit by this, even if it does get resolved, would you renew a six month subscription? I'm a few days away from the renewal point, but I don't want to pay for six months of not being able to play. At this point, I think I need to decide if I like PSU enough to go month to month. What about the rest of you?

I know what's going on, i've been reading around.
GameGuard injects itself into every running process and monitors ir to see if it's trying to hack the game. Obviously new anti-virus and Internet security tools prevent this from happening (self protection mechanisms).
I use Kaspersky and it tells me everytime that GG is trying to inject it's modules into every process and asks for permission.
But, you would think, if we decativated these sorts of programs we would be ok no?
Not exactly as for GG just got into a new level of cheapness: They now detect if you have a tool capable of stopping itself from injecting it's modules and if so it wont run.
Now this IS a GameGuard error and they already expressed their thoughts about changeing this: they will do no such thing as correct this.
As far as renewing my license or my advice to any1 in this situation is: Don't.
At least not the 6 month one, unless you plan on playing with no antivirus untill they "fix" this but i think it wont happen anytime soon... Or we can all just buy a PS2 and play on the Ps2...
SEGA, SEGA, SEGA... when will you learn the lesson?
you NEED the players, we dont need PSU...

Ok, thanks so far guys
So it is a GG error after all, and I sorta got that message after a while form looking around for answers
I was able to uninstall the EA Link,
still came up with the same message
but I had the anti-virus software installed so I'll try it without it.
And I hope Sega notices the magor drop in the # of players not playing PSU so that they realize the number of PC players are not playing, because GG has messed up. They better fix this soon, or I might be forced to buy a PS2 and play it that way, which would be some real bs.

What forums are discussing GG's angle on this? I'd like to see the thread of that conversation. If the situation is by design on GameGuard's part, I suppose that's the end of my story here, since, as fond as I am of this game, there are some things I'm not willing to do just to be able to play it, or really to play any game. It's pretty disheartening for this to happen right on the eve of Operation Firebreak.

I'm still trying to figure out just exactly what my GG is reacting to. Because other than Vent and my IM programs, the only processes I have running that might interfere is Symantec and SpyBot's TeaTimer, two programs I'm not about to compromise on...

Possibly good news. A new GG update is out as of now, and I'm not getting booted 10 seconds after launching the PSU application.

After the new GameGuard patch, GameGuard does no longer pick on Kaspersky Internet Security http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
I actually emailes SEGA and nProtect about the "bug" and i called Tech support at Kaspersky Labs... Besides Kaspersky no1 answered me as of yet but if they do i'll post the reply here.
Anyway, problem solved and we can all return to PSU http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
If any1 is still not being able to connect please let me know and i'll try to find a solution

Thank you for the updates, Turambar and Sensei Sin. I tried and was able to successfully connect now. I was also very upset at the silence that had been emanating from Sega and GameGuard until Clumsyorchid posted a response in the PSU forums. I'll count that as a response on Sega's behalf, anyway.
So, I guess I'll renew my subscription, but I'm only doing it for a month this time. I'd like to see where this is going, and I learned an important lesson about relying on games that I don't own the board and pieces to.

just today gameguard had an update and the game works just fine for me now. Looks like they found the problem and fixed it.
Thankyou all who responded and gave your assistance.
