View Full Version : GC: FSOD: Does it occur more on dialup or broadband?

I'm very curious: Does FSOD happen to dialup users more or less than it does to a broadbander? Please vote for the option that is most similar to your experiences.

No 'SODs ever on my broadband. Not to mention it detects connection loss immediately.

Speaking of this though, has anyone ever had the loading error where you hear this horrible beep after the screen freezes? I've had this problem with Metroid Prime and now it happened in PSO once. My GCN is quite new (Got it this summer) and I'm wondering if anyone else might know a fix for this, as it seems to be a gamecube problem.

I'm on broadband (cable modem direct to GCN), with no FSOD (not to mention disconnections) yet. Hmmmmm...

And that's very strange about the beeping sound. I somehow remember a similar thing happening to me, but I can't remember if it was on Gamecube or another system altogether. Might've been GTA:VC; that game is the most glitch packed thing you'll play ALL year. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif But no, haven't heard of any GCN problems like that...
It's true that Metroid Prime is a bit glitchy though, quite a few people (including 2 of my pals) have had the game up and freeze on them. I've had no problems so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if other weird bugs existed in the game.
Come to think of it, I think PSO on DC DID give me a funky beeping like that. Hmm.

Its actually true what Ruby-Chan is telling us... It is a fundamental and serious problem with the Gamecube... Ive had it happen to me several times... The games involed are Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Smash bros.... I havent had the misfortune of it happening to PSO yet, but its something just waiting to happen... My friend had this problem to... Especially with Metroid Prime... Eventually he had to buy a new laser-reader-thingy because his GC wouldnt even read his discs... It has gotten better, but he still experiences problems...(this has nothing to do with dirty discs or crap like that... His discs were as clean as can be!) This made me come to the conclusion that it is something with the hardware... Something terribly wrong... Sure, im a bit paranoid.. Its a Nintendos masterpiece, right?? Nintendo is renowed for their sturdy and resiliant hardware?? But as we can se and hear, im not the only one with this problem... Its really disturbing... And as a follow-up question, can this have anything to do with FSOD maybe...???

Crap!! Sounds like the DC's junky GD-ROM drive all over again! I honestly don't remember if I had that problem on GCN though. I'll definitely make sure to keep an eye (and ear) out for that though, freaky.
Course, you guys are keeping BOTH air vents clear, right? The GCN can be a little picky on where it wants to be set; it can't be too close to the side of an entertainment center, for example. Both sides have to be clear at all times. You probably know that though, and it doesn't sound like it'd have anything to do with the drive.

Jeez. Maybe someone should make a poll on THAT?

I've only had one FSOD on dialup. It happened when I tried to "meet the user." I held down the soft reset and everything saved just fine.

This wasn't on your poll, but I've had two BSODs already. The first one happened while I was fighting through the Seaside stage. The second happened when I tried to teleport back to the lobby from the Hunter's Guild.

Just kick the 'cube around a few times, maybe drop it off a balcony, or push it down the stairs...that should fix it....you may not be able to use the 'Cube anymore, but at least you won't be in danger of the BEEPY SOUND OF DOOOOOM!

I've had 6 FSODs on my dialup: 5 relating to Vega, 1 relating to the Japanese server (I forgot which name, it's the first Japanese server listed).

The 5 relating to Vega occur trying to get to Vega via the "Meet the User" function after a search or going to a almost crowded block on Vega.

The 1 on the Japanese server was trying to get to a half-full block on that server.

Each FSOD results in a total screen freeze WITH that horrible buzzing sound. So, is this a network issue or hardware defect? I've gone through TWO Gamecubes with the same FSOD effect.

Of the 6 incidents, only in one instance were my items left intact. The other times I lost anything that was not in storage or not equipped. I have lost rares this way. As a result, I always play with the equipped weapon. I never carry different weapons online. I have not had the game crash offline.

In my opinion BSOD is caused by internet and FSOD by hardware.

FSOD in lobbies can't be helped. It's a bug which occurs occasionaly when you try to enter a full lobby. The reason why it happens is still unknown. FSOD/BSOD in teams are PPP errors. PSOv3.1 is supposed to fix the PPP errors in the game.

I've had 2 FSODs on my BBA, so it does happen on broadband. Although, since I've started power cycling my modem, I have yet to have another

^w^

PS. I've had Metroid Prime lock up, too.

I've succumb to FSOD 3 times (dial-up user), and its always accompanied by a loud buzzing sound from the television, the moment the screen freezes.

Always happened on Vega too.

Just a quick question: When did you get your Gamecube?

From what it looks like to me, it's a problem only with newer Gamecubes, as I've only heard of it happening on fairly recently purchased Gamecubes, and I have yet to have it happen to me, and I've got a launch Gamecube (going along with only hearing it happen to newer ones) I'm curious what the problem is myself. - Sorry for the off topic post.

I'm on BB, never had an FSOD except for 2-3 that were from the server. (Joining a full block the same time as someone else, etc)

looks like the problem is definately more frequent with Dial up users.

My game cube is from launch and i have had the BEEP crash once with PSO

other than that ive had one BSOD and about 5 FSOD.
in all different areas, sometimes ingame, sometimes lobby hopping, somtimes trying to enter or exit a game...

**if you have an FSOD without the beep, you can disconnect the phone cord from your cube and you will DC from the internet and the system will save your game and your items.

ive saved stuff a few times like this.

sometimes the system crashes and you cannot recover (like BSOD, or FSOD with the BEEP)

but as long as you deposit Rare/Important items in the bank when your online, or have all of the good stuff equipped, youll be ok!

I've heard that routers can pretty much stop the FSOD... is that true? *hopeful*

As for the GC freezing up, I've had it do that to me playing Metroid Prime, around the Chozo Ruins. It's happened 3 times at one elevator, but never anywhere else, so now I'm just trying to avoid that elevator. =P

Pretty sure a router only helps with PPPoE disconnection problems, but I could be wrong...

And damn, MP is actually kind of notorious for a freeze bug. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif I myself haven't gotten it once, but it DOES occur near an elevator most of the time, I've heard; this happened to at least two of my friends. What a pain that would be...
