I think it helps to look on a person's profile. I sometimes get a big shocker with some people, like Tact for example, who's Avatars, titles, sigs, whatever lead to one genger, but they are the other. Of course, it doesn't help when some people don't put up their gender.

Eclair was a guy, this is a picture from when he visited navi. I'm surprised she's still has it up. I remember it because when i first saw it I though "NO SHIT! Navi must have made a typo! Then I began to read through past posts, and hung around in the chat room, and I believe that Eclair is most definitly a guy.
