Hey all!

Some friends and I have had an epiphany of sorts. We have kicked the idea around for a while and we have decided to make a live-action fan video on Youtube.com featuring PSU-themed weapons. We just thought it would be a fun thing to do. The videos that inspired us to do this in the first place were the Ryan vs Dorkman (RvD) videos on youtube, in which two normal guys -in normal clothes and normal surroundings- fight to the death with light sabers. The videos were very well done with creative fight choreography. There are currently two RvD videos to date:

RvD1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O_xaqWNd4w

RvD2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-is63goeBgc

We plan to do something similar, however, with PSU-themed weapons. The filming will take place over the course of a few months, as we need time to make weapon props, find a location(s) to fight, create an elaborate choreography, add digital effects (like the glow of the weapons), etc. There will be no roleplay involved and will probably be keeping dialog to a minimum. We will be filming in normal environments (though a few areas that look similar to the forests of Perum have come to our attention) and we will be wearing normal clothes, though we're not entirely sure yet if we want to trick out our everyday clothes with glowing line shields. That is also an idea we're kicking around, though so far it's looking pretty good. I've already begun drawing up designs for different styles of line shields for T-shirts, etc.

As far as the weapons go, most, if not all the weapon props will probably be made from simple, everyday things you can find at your local hardware store. Don't worry, I promise that the finished product will not look like crap, but a replica of the actual weapon. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Tomorrow I will be posting a video on youtube announcing our plans for the video and asking for suggestions, such as what PSU-themed weapons you would like to see us use in the fight, whether or not you think we should add line shields as a shiny touch to the film, etc.

My homepage on Youtube is:
www.youtube.com/crush40rocks

I will be posting the video at the top of my page, so you won't have to go looking for it. Also, if you would like to keep an eye out for the vid, or any updates on it, you can subscribe to my channel. This film is intended to appeal to both the Phantasy Star Universe community and those who just love a good fight scene.

I've posted a poll consisting of a selection of weapons from PSU. If you have any reccomendations as to what weapons you would like to see in the film, please feel free to cast your vote! (if I have left a hunter weapon type out, please let me know. x_X)

Any questions, comments, or suggestions? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I have recently added the video announcing the project on youtube. the link is as follows:

Use a Wand at least once or twice so we can see what you are fully capable of. Other than that, good idea.

Daggers, Daggers and more daggers... and claws!
Slicers?
Cards?
Axe? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Wow, that was a higher quality performance than I expected. You can really do something as high a quality as that?
Erm, I myself would love to see a spear in action, since they get so little love. I hardly ever see any spears in real combat.

CaptainPlanet

XD I added axe as part of the original poll, but I deleted it to make room for something else. I only had limited room too. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif I think slicers and cards shouldn't be too hard to do. I don't really know for sure if we are going to do much in the force weapon category. Though we are using PSU-themed weapons, we're going to try not to delve too far into the world of PSU as far as TECHNICs and such. It's one thing to see melee weapons in action if you're oblivious to PSU, but seeing flashy magic might ruin the vibe for some non-PSU people. The film will be mostly focused on melee combat, though a little ranged may be thrown in as well (ex. dual wielding a saber/dagger/whatever with a handgun)

I agree, a spear could make for some clever choreography, and I think I could have some fun structuring a fight scene with one. We'll see what the final outcome is on youtube and here on the thread! You want to see lances? Cast your vote in the poll! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Don't worry, there will be no voice unheard. I will be reading all of your posts thoughtfully and will be taking note of all your suggestions. While I'm doing this for PSU people and non, I mainly do it for you guys, since you may get a little more enjoyment out of it, knowing where the weapons come from. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Hey,well if it isn't Cap,haven't seen you in a while. Pretty awesome that you continue to be a creative force that makes you an appealing person to be around. I'm really looking forward to this.

Well, being a Fighgunner I'd really like to see some Twin Sabers/Double Sabers. (Please, for gods sake DO NOT DO TORNADO DANCE.) Well. Hell it's really up to you,I just think it would be sorta,"meh." if it wasn't done right. Besides,Psycho Crusher is already been done in kung fu movies for years. Bring something new to the table!

Although Splendor Crush would be incredibly amusing.
If you use claws,at some point a shot similar to this has to happen.(Please.)

Einhart, good to hear from you again. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Don't worry, there's no way in hell I'm going to ruin my film with Tornado Dance. I'm going to keep the choreography in the film as realistic as possible, which is why I'm also avoiding the use of any TECHNICs.

And at first, I was kind of turned away by traps, and it still may not bode too well with the PSU unfamilliars. However, if we do decide to incorporate traps into the mix, then it would have to be introduced into the film in a way that everyone can understand and relate with it, not just the PSU community.

Now that I think about it, if inserted correctly into the film, a trap could cleverly turn the tide in the fight. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif I'll give it some thought. Anyone else want to see traps?

How about the line shield effect idea. What do you guys think of that?

Hmm... I was also thinking about adding nanotransformers to the back of the collars of our shirts. Not too large or noticable, but just to put one there. If we did, then it would be for the purpose of whipping out another weapon from seemingly nowhere, which is the purpose nanotransformers serve in PSU, along with storing items and such in such a small place on the back of your neck.

I'm really on the fence with this one.

On one hand:
It would not only make sense to the PSU players who are watching, but the ability to instantly draw another weapon from nowhere could add a bit more creativity to the choreography.

On the OTHER hand:
If I included nanotransformers for that purpose and whipped out a weapon from the back of my neck, the non-PSU viewers would be like "........ wtf..."

I really don't know if I should add it or not, from a director's standpoint.

Double Saber vs Twin Claws, If you make the video using only sabers and double sabers then it would look too Star Wars like, you need to have an exclusive PS weapon in the dual like Twin Claws to make it uniquely Phantasy Star.

You should have one person win the dual and while they are celebrating their victory have a third person telepipe in PSO style and then PWN the winner with a technic then telepipe out again. The End.

Agreed.

The last thing I want to do is show people what they've already seen. I'm trying to bring something fresh to the viewers.

I'll most likely avoid that combination.

However, a message to all readers:

Your votes count! When we have chosen a location to film on and other details, and are ready to begin choreographing the fight, whichever 2 (possibly 3) weapon choices that are leading in both the polls on this thread and comments on youtube (the combined total) will be chosen for the film. In a few days we're going to experiment with different styles of fighting, each with different weapon types.

I'm thinking if you make it a point to show how the nanotransformers work,or at least make them apparent and important, then it won't be a problem. If this means you must take a bit longer get the point across, that might make it more interesting to the viewer,if at first it was used to draw someone in. Present it well, and people will want to see what else it can do,make it wonderful and grand if you will. The very idea of a nanotranformer is something in itself.
I guess what I mean to say is,if you make it obvious and interesting as to what a nanotransformer does, then there should be no problem.

Ah,line shielding. I like the idea of it showing up,maybe you could take a page from Outlaw Star and even use it aggressively. Although,if shielding does come into play,I should think Rabol Rappy and Stormline should be showcased. Even that (Loveheart Line? Hard to recall.) While it might throw a viewer off at first,it would be something for them to further distinguish the characters. Being that there will be little dialogue,a detail like that could work in your favor.

I understand your points about traps,it was just an idea,I know if it was me I'd keep things intresting with them.

I think the nanotransformer could work. If you make it like how Ethan did in story mode by pulling it out from the back of his shirt.

You guys make some good points about the nanotransformer idea. If I can give it the appropriate introduction in the film, it may turn out for the better. Maybe just focusing the camera on it just before the fight while the person gives it some kind of attention might be enough.

And as for the line shielding, we're pretty much certain that we're going to do it, however, as surprising as it is, we weren't really planning on it living out it's purpose for much more than just another shiny add-on. I mean, it might be cool to show some kind of special etheric effect if someone blocked an attack, might even be good for a temporary point-blank, face-to-face force fight between the weapon and the shielding, but I'm not too sure. We already mentioned that if introduced properly, the nanotransformer could work, and the same can be said about line shielding. We may or may not decide on that function of the shield, it depends on what you guys have to say about it. I just want to avoid getting too "out there." What I mean by that is... well... look at the RvD videos I posted. They're normal guys with normal surroundings. The only things out of the ordinary were the sabers, and the occasional use of the force, and they still managed to keep it somewhat down-to-earth.

So, maybe if we took it easy with the sci-fi elements and just lightly brushed over them in the film, it wouldn't take too much attention away from the main attraction: The fight itself.

Very cool videos I picked double saber b/c it isn't too different from the sabers you have been using so it wouldn't be too hard to work with.

Ah right, I forgot to mention something. Why not, instead of having each character only use one weapon, you have the wepaons being broken part way through and have your characters pull out another one? For instance, if they start off with a sword, have the sword thrown to the side (like the light sabers were many times) and have him pull out twin sabers.
Just a small fanboyish suggestion...

I think for the weapons both of the fighters should have a saber/handgun, or dagger/handgun combo and a two handed weapon like the double saber, spear, sword ,or ax. That way you can inplement the nanotransformers and still have the fight as the main focus.

the weapons ideas could be like this

fighter 1
saber/handgun
twin sabers

fighter 2
dagger/handgun
double saber

just my opnion, but one thing that you should give the fighters is the saber/dagger handgun combo

if double saber is one of the weapons of choice, the crea double saber is a must.

Otherwise I'd say Dagger(s) and Swords, maybe ones that look like Jogiri/Hanzo from PSU.

Great News! I've just been given permission to use a number of great locations to shoot the film from a friend of mine who owns a building developement company (Thank you Manuel Developement Co.!) . I have been given coices such as old abandoned buildings, a bayside beach setting, piers, a train station, grassy plains, fields, construction sites, and more! I will be going to look at each site individually on Tuesday and will film each location and post it on youtube so you guys can decide what the coolest environment for a PSU-themed fight would be!

For visual effect you could always send a little stream or arc of energy that flows from the nanotransformer to the hands before the weapon is made. That way people could tell that is where the weapons are stored. I'd also like to request someone switching weapons mid attack, like someone going for a power swing with a normal saber only to switch to a sword or axe before it connects to catch their opponent off guard.

I've recently come up with some ideas for new weapons that will probably show up in the film, weapons never seen in Phantasy Star. The new photon weapons are as follows:

1. Mace
2. Nun-chuck
3. Shuriken (yeah, this was used in PSO as a slicer weapon)

I'm also going to put in the Frying Pan for like 2 seconds as a PSU insider gag. One of the fighters will pull it from their nanotransformer and do a double-take and look at it like, "... wtf" and toss it aside. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
