View Full Version : Time zones

In the mainland United States, we have four time zones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern. Converting between the time zones is pretty simple, really. If I mention something in Pacific Time, you only need to add one hour for Mountain Time, or three hours for Eastern Time. Works just as simple in reverse as well.

So for the love of God WHY do I see this in EVERY FUCKING THREAD where an event is mentioned:

Person 1: We will all meet up at 4 PM Pacific time.

Person 2: What time is that in EST??

WHY THE FUCK ARE SO MANY PEOPLE TOO LAZY OR STUPID TO DO SIMPLE, FUCKING, ARITHMETIC? How the fuck do you manage to have enough brain power to breathe and walk simultaneously? It is SO simple. Really. You should know this by the time you're able to start watching stuff that's not cartoons on TV.

The next event I plan (if I decide to host another anytime soon) will read something like this:

4 PM Pacific, 12 AM UK time, 8 AM(?) Japan time. If you can't figure out what that is in EST, don't bother showing up.

I can't be bothered with people that are too fucking lazy to think for themselves.

In Canada we have Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, and Newfie (I can't remember the actual name of that Time Zone). Only difference is, Newfie time is only a half-hour ahead instead of a full hour.

Newfie time Lolwut? XD

I only know pacific, eastern, and that Holland is +6hrs ahead than mine, because a friend of mine lives there. So, I don't think the issue is simple arithmetic, more like people don't know what to add and subtract from their own timezones. Heck, I sure as hell don't. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I know that EST translates into GMT-5. hat's the extent of my GMT knowledge (though I could infer that PST would be GMT-8 and so on).

Like I said, I can't remember the actual name of the Newfie time zone. >_>

No, it's not that, I just never knew they had their own time zone! XD Much less that it's only half an hour, lol.

It basically only encompasses Newfound Land and Labrador. Tis a weird one.

Canada also has Atlantic Time, which covers everything east of Quebec (except Newfoundland).

The responses to this topic are demoralizing.

You're demoralizing! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I have a terrible memory and have forgotten when my own birthday was before, it comes as no surprise to me that I can't remember timezones. :/

You forgot Alaska and Hawaiian time zones as well if you want to get really nitpicky. But, ranting about laziness is ranting about the world. The end result is you are blue in the face, out of breath, and frustrated to no end and the world is sitting there saying, "LOL, WUT?"

Hey Sekani, you posted this at 14:40 board time yesterday...

What's that in EST? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

There are various places around the world that go by their own time rather than the global time zones...

Also I almost never remember in what order the timezones are, nor their names. It's mainly cuz I don't deal with them much...I haven't thought about them in about 3 or 4 months now...and i only looked at it once and then before that another 4 or so months had passed... but i'm also bad at regular time so time zones just screw me up more lol...

but anyways what i'm getting at is that people don't deal with them much so they don't retain them very well.

Screw time zones, use internet time (http://www.swatch.com/internettime/home.php) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Internet time is a great concept, but it really takes away the relativity of having time zones in Babylonian time.

You know, how you could say "noon" and mean the middle of the day, 12:00, wherever you are... Whereas "noon" would have a different numerical value depending on where you are, if you're using internet time. It really ends up defeating its own purpose, being that when someone relocated to a new area, they'd have to figure out their .beat offset, so they'd know precisely when to sleep and when to wake... Which would introduce time zones, and we'd see the cycle repeat itself.

It's really the fact that it has to go up against our current means of measuring time, that prevents it from becoming commonly-used.
