i was playing from the wee hours in the morning until about a few minutes ago. total play time about 7 hours. in that time i had gone from ultimate temple to gar griffin. i was just about to fight him and i telepiped up. i went to the nurse and ran from her desk. as i was passing the nearest doorway to her in ep2, my gamecube started to make a funny noise. sounded like the disc was skipping.
i appeared to have fsod'ed offline! after about fifteen seconds of staring at the screen, it went black with a message.
"an error has occured. please turn the power off and refer to the Nintendo Gamecube instruction booklet for more information"
i was totally stunned and feared the worst. so i turned the power off and then back on. the damage was time lost. the character i was playing with had just lost those 7 hours of play. luckily i had no corruption or lost items. 225,000 experience was gone and items aquired in that time.
on dreamcast i had my system running for way more hours on end with no problem. so i never did he usual rpg save save save thing while playing it on gamecube. now i have learned a hard lesson.
the warning to all players is that if you unlock areas, quit the game and restart. this version of pso has far more glitches than dreamcast, and the gamecube seems less stable a platform. many of the games i have played on it have locked up. maybe my ngc is a lemon. anyway i just wanted to warn everyone because i dont wish what happened to me on anyone.
btw, do you know how hard it is to get a hucast to ultimate gal de bal! guess i get to do it again.

Whoa, only 225,000 EXP in 7 hours?.... You can get that in about 1 1/2 hours online lol.
But, that sucks a lot. sorry dude. My gamecube was on for about 8-9 hours yesterday, and still runnin strong.
Methinks you've got a lemon... or, you might want to see if you can clean the lens on the laser. I willing to hazard a guess that will clear up your problems.

Sorry to tell you but your GC has just been uh well burned out. Just due to overuse. YOu can get it fixed, but its not really cost-effective. Seeing if your a PSO addict like I am, I went out the next day and bought one in the morning. I chose to get the Limited Edition Platinum GC, and lucky for me there is a $50 rebate on it right now. There may still be a rebate but I'm not positive. ITS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT WHEN YOU BUY YOUR GAMECUBE THIS TIME, GET IT AT ELECTRONICS BOUTIQUE. THEY OFFER A 2 YEAR WARRANTY THAT YOU PAY FOR, IT COST $20. When I had DC, I broke 5 dreamcasts over the time I played PSO. Well chance is you'll be going thru a GC every 4 or 5 months if you play often enough! In 1 month I played over 400 hours. I have no life, and I'm proud of it lol. But buy a new gc its the best way out

yeah 7 hours is a bit pathetic, but when you are as rare impared as i am, and watching movies in split screen mode at the same time, thats not too bad lol.
like i said, its hard to get a no shifta, no resta hucast through ultimate temple. hucasts own all online but they stink like feet offline. make one and give him a mechgun and go into caves at level 4 -- thats what its like. i could get exp at much higher amounts online but thats not what i am after.

My GC did that too... I have had it since the launch. They say it is because either the disc is dirty, or the lense is dirty...
It is Christmas time though... box the GC back up and take it to a store (most any store will let you exchange it the day after XMAS) the day after Christmas... tell them that you got the wrong color and just exchange it for another one... unless you love the color of yours...
btw... Nintendo knows about that error... it is even listed on their site...
and yes... I was able to get another GC by doing that.

Unfortunately, the night before I experienced a FSOD online. Ugh. >_- Before that it was a BSOD offline a few weeks ago.
Yesterday, I lost 5 hours of PSO play time.. UGH and got the same error message. "an error has occured. please turn the power off and refer to the Nintendo Gamecube instruction booklet for more information" I accidently got the NPC in the quest killed, was ported back to town to watch the Hunter Guild lady kick me back to normal play. Well.. leaving the quest to normal play the error message came up. Fortunately I restarted and everything was fine. 3 problems with PSO and no problems with any other game. Ugh this is more problems I have had with PSO on GC than DC. >_<

I actually got the same error message the other day with Metroid. Turned out my disc had a little dust on it I think. I wiped it clean and it played fine afterward. DVD is a very sensitive process and the tiniest imperfection can cause errors. BTW if you didn't know, when you clean a disc, wipe from the center out to the edges. Don't wipe in a circular motion, you're actually going against the grain so to speak.

Extended warranties are a money-losing proposition. Think of all the electronics you bought in the last five years. If you bought warranties on each, you'd have forked out an extra 10-20% on every item. On $5000 worth of electronics that's as much as an extra thousand bucks. Now think of how many of these items broke-- after 30-day store return policy, and after the manufacturer warranty ran out, but before the product was outdated and replaced with a newer product. You could replace 2 gamecubes and come out way ahead by not buying warranties.
And remember these are essentially toys, designed and tested to tolerate 8-year olds dropping them, getting peanut butter in them, etc.
The next round of gaming consoles are due out in 2-3 years anyway.
