People will use "y" for yes when asked a question.

When people say 'y' do they mean 'why' or 'yes' or does it depend on the situation??? People are confusing the heck out of me. >_<;; It's as bad as when 'gtg' went from being 'got to go' to 'good to go'... I can't keep up with the lazy internetz 5p34k!!!

FAIL. Srsly, that does not look like a peace sign. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
They usually say "y" when they mean "why." Personally, I don't see how come it's so much trouble for some people to type three letters, but whatever.

I think it depends on the context it's used because I've seen it mean "yes" and "why" in different conversations. 'Tis confusing for me too. ;/

Are people so far gone mentally or physically that they simply have not the ability to use "why" instead of "y"? It's not that hard. Nor is it taxing on your hands. (Unless you have arthritis or carprel tunnel (did I spell that right?).)

Now... if you're one of those people that haven't gotten that PSU Texter thing and don't have a usb keyboard for your PS2, then it's a little more understandable. Not only that, but sometimes it's required if you wana keep up with a conversation (in the case that a ps2 user is with pc users).

So in light of things... under certain circumstances, it's annoying as ****ing hell, and under others it's understandable (yet still annoying).

I guess my two cents to pc users out there using stuff like "y" instead of "why" is...

Please type in normal English instead of the english that lacks all of the vowels. .... Is there such a thing as a "fear of vowels?" That'd be interesting.

The proper use of "y" can be found here. Take the time to watch the whole thing. I promise it's worth your time.

Also, don't bother if you don't have sound.

It means "I'm a dreg of society with nothing useful to offer to anyone".

In fact, all chat "shortcuts" and leet mean that, too.

That's pretty much what y for yes and n for no came from, I'm sure. Just look at that one episode of The Simpsons were Homer becomes so fat he gets to work from home with a computer.

I don't really understand what's so hard about typing out, "Why" or "Yes", instead of just, "y". I get kind of annoyed with stuff like this. For example:

A few nights back, I randomly gave someone 750,000 meseta who I saw in a weapon shop, wanting to buy something. I gave it to him out of courtesy and the only thing I got in return was, "thx".

Even if he would've just said THANKS, I would've liked that more than him just giving me the company name for some audio work, "THX".

Some people...*sighs*

Well, I was without a keyboard for a very long time on PS2. So I occationally use "y" for both "why" AND "yes".
I'd hope that it's self explanitory in the conversation I'm having.
Whenever I think there maybe some confusion, I'd type "?" first.
Then "y" afterwards if I meant "why". Usually, ppl can't misread that as a "yes". It gives ppl more time to process the question first, then realise it's part of "why?". Rather than "yes?".

As for saying "yes" on the virtual keyboard, I've found that typing "nod" was a whole lot quicker than typing "yes". So I've been doing that for a long time ever since. I'd like to think I've gotten pretty good with the virtual keyboard, so typing "nod" is almost as quick as "y" for "yes". And usually, there's no confusion there.

It would make sense to use it if you cannot fit everything in one message. I find myself abbrevating from time to time.

And why the hell do NPC's get longer text bubbles?
