I was assuming you meant the dude you battle after the Elite Four in Gold/Silver. The game calls him Red also.

They're the same character at different time periods. (keep in mind that Gold and Silver are three years after you beat the league with him, he's pretty tough by then.)

Unusual as in they play uniquely, though I can't say I really like Ice Climbers, they were cool, but didn't really suit my play style. :/
