Hey has anyone bought that PSU texter that psoworld was talking about sometime ago, and how is it and is it worth buying or should I wait for the xbox 360 keyboard attachment coming soon?

I got the PS2 version of it but it works the same way.
Anyway, I'll make it short:

-It's OK. Very awkward to use first time around.
-VERY HIGH learning curve. Don't expect to be "typing" in a decent rate within a few minutes. It took me a few hours to learn. Still learning how to use it actually...
-Worth buying? Depends. You get some "ok" PSU swag.
-It works on a PC though I don't know why you would use it here.

It's hard to justify its purchase. It's a nifty little device if you have the patience to learn it but for $35 ($40 for 360?), you can buy something more useful. One thing I really hate is that you can't move around while typing (which makes sense since you're using the analog sticks to type). If this was out during the Gamecube days, then maybe you'll have a better reason to get it since they didn't have an official keyboard when PSO came out.

Why did I get it? Because...

You can get a decent USB keyboard for 15 bucks. Don't waste your money on the Texter.

Looks like i'll wait for the 360 keyboard attachment then, thanks for your replies

That's what I'm doing. While I have a USB keyboard, I now have a setup that's not exactly pretty when used with a Keyboard. Plus, I also have a Treo Smartphone, which uses a smaller version of the 360 keyboard attachment for which I can actually type quite fast with. I may give that attachment a whirl.

I am using a cheap over the counter USB keyboard that I plug into the back of my 360 and this is working.

It's worth noting that it has yet to be confirmed if the Xbox 360 ChatPad is compatible with PSU yet.

Also, voice chat is your friend.

So the only main plus the texter has over keyboard is the lack of switching between bulky accessories? You just pick up the texter and play while you'll gotta put down the controller to switch to keyboard?

Now you're saying you can't even text WHILE walk around with the texter?!
But can you still go into your inventory AND walk around like in PSOX days? There doesn't seem to be a way to do it now on PS2 controller. So I was wondering if the texter would at least give us THAT much.

Wow it sadly sounds difficult, I guess i'll buy the texter only for the collectibles but i'll wait to get the keyboard attachment and as for the usb keyboard i'll use the one from my old hp computer for it.

cant voice chat in a simple mail though. I use a wireless kb but I'm dyin to know if the 360 chat pad works on psu. Back lit keys and the convenience of not having a bulky wireless kb in my lap FTW! Only if it works on psu tho...

well not everyone likes having a board on their lap the entire time their gaming and I heard there is a regular texter too and cheaper as well. the PSU one is more because it comes with posters and goodies like that

Simple mail sucks, thank you very much PSU censor. I usually prefer using Xbox Live voice and text messages whenever possible.

USB keyboard works fine with me; most people with some practice can at least keep the chara moving while typing with the other hand, but I'm curious about the kb attachment for the controller and I might go for that if it's good.

PC people with controllers don't have to put the keyboard on their lap - so use the same logic, just put a coffee table in front of you and set it down on that.

Personally I would go insane trying to learn how to TYPE on a... what is it, 16 button controller? That's just too painful. I know most people don't know how to type well on a keyboard, I would hardly expect people to learn how to do it with a controller.

That is correct.
Basically its like this (for the PS2 version):
You stop.
Hit the left analog stick twice (L3) to go into "typing mode".
Do all the directional combos to type out what you need to type.
Then down on both analog sticks to enter what you just typed.
To get out of typing mode, you hit L3 twice again.

So no, you can't move around since you're using the analog sticks to type.
FYI: You could move around while navigating in the menu back in the Dreamcast days http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif
You can do so in PSU in the PS2 version. It's just that the texter takes that aspect away. 360 version is the same way.

That's true. It's about $25 ($30 for 360) for the regular one.

To show everyone how overwhelming it is to learn how to type with this thing:

So basically, you have to memorize all of those directional combos to actually do some good.

I could recommend just simply buying a Logitech keyboard from newegg, for only $8. That's what I did, but I was a little angry that 2-day shipping costed more than the keyboard itself.

it has its flaws like not being able to send mail from the partner card but that gets a fix in AoI. also @ space helps with the sensor. but I wouldn't say it sux exactly. I dont have every1s gamertag AND partner card so it is convenient for sending multiple mails simultaneously.
