Everyone who thinks any individual can "give us" a "good, bad, ugly, thirteen-speed, x economy" raise your hand. Now go hit yourself over the head with the nearest blunt object, once for every dollar of the U.S. national debt. Now go take on the day.

While that may be true it doesn't stop people from blaming the leader of ANY organization for the faults of said group. The leader severs as both a figurehead and a scapegoat. If something good happens
then the leader is credited as the one responsible and vice versa for the opposite. It's never those who were directly responsible for the cause that are mentioned...only the one who approves of it (whatever or not outside influence has anything to do with it.)

Honestly, I agree the point you were trying to make. People should change their mode of thinking.

Its cool to have your opinions about gay marriage and religion, but to push them upon other people and to restrict other people's rights simply because you do not agree with them does not a good leader make.

A lot of people would be getting stoned, natch? Rather unpleasant business. The Bible says what you shouldn't do, but it doesn't say that gays can't get married. Following the strict law of the ten commandments would make more sense, and would not have that anti gay marriage stipulation.

just because a government follows a religion doesn't make it work any better. It only works if the religion itself supports principles that benefit humanity. Your logic is heavily skewed, and it's looking more and more like you merely have a Christian bias. We live in the US, part of our ideals is to allow all religions, so frankly if you say so and so shouldn't do this or that because your God says so, there are many of us that don't give a damn about an opinion made on such a basis.

Church and State
The EU is a secular body with a separation of church and state. There are no formal ties to any religion and no mention of religion in any current or proposed treaty.[11] Discussion over the draft texts of the European Constitution and later the Reform Treaty have included proposals to mention Christianity and/or God in the preamble of the text. This call has been supported by Christian religious leaders, most notably the Pope.[12] However explicit inclusion of a link to religion faced opposition from secularists and the final Constitution referred to Europe's "Religious and Humanist inheritance". A second attempt to include Christianity in the treaty was undertaken in 2007 with the drafting of the Reform Treaty. Angela Merkel promised the Pope that she would use her influence during Germany's presidency to try to include a reference to Christianity and God in this replacement for the constitution. This has provoked opposition, not least in the German press,[13] and as this inclusion may have caused problems in reaching a final agreement, this attempt was given up.[14] Of the Union's states, only 4 of the 27 have an official state religion. These being Cyprus (Cypriot Orthodox Church), Denmark (Danish National Church), Greece (Church of Greece), Malta (Roman Catholic Church) and England in the UK (Church of England). Although some other churches have a close relationship with the state.[15]

Buttiglione's views caused controversy in the ParliamentIn the secularising EU, Vatican has been vocal against a perceived "militant atheism". It based this on a number of events, for example; the rejection of religious references in the Constitution and Reform Treaty, the rejection by Parliament of Rocco Buttiglione as Justice Commissioner in 2004,[12] at the same time, Parliament approved Peter Mandelson as Trade Commissioner, who is himself a homosexual;[16] and the legalisation of Same-sex marriage in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain.[12] The European Parliament has also been calling for gay marriage to be recognised across the EU.[17] States such as Latvia and Poland have rejected legislation designed to stop discrimination against homosexuals. This has been stated to be on religious grounds, with homosexuals described as "degenerate" and "unnatural". The Catholic church's opposition to homosexuality has reinforced public opinion. The difference of opinion between these countries and Brussels has been damaging relations.
