How do you use the PSO font and the symbols like the musical note, star, heart etc.
I see people writing out phrases that have these characters in them. I have the ASCII keyboard and I've tried nearly every key combination that I can think of.
Anybody know how to do this?

You have to set your language to Japanese...

when you have that ascii-keypad you should have a ctrl-sized button just right of the space-key - this is supposed be the change-button from kanji to romaji (actual western letters) - at least like that the buttons name makes sense ^_^
(i cannot test it out myself, since i only own the keypad but neither game nor cube... yet)
give it a try
or you could just preset some short-cuts (like, 'musical note' or some smileys) using the soft-keyboard and japanese language-setting (like i did in version 1 and 2...)
good luck & have fun

Thank you. I finally got it to work.
You have to change to Japanese, make your shortcuts, and then change it back to english.
It turns out that the extra japanese buttons on the keyboard don't do anything when you are in English mode. It's not fair because when you are in Japanese mode there is a button (next to the 1 button) to switch between English and Japanese.
Oh well... I guess I'll have to live with it.

This was always one of the things that subtly irritated me about how ST put the language system together, and it shows their bias as well.
The JPs can use both English and JP characters to spell as they please. But they do not allow any primary non-JP language speaker to even type a JP character. Now, I do not know them all, but I would at least like to TRY to communicate using the Katakana/Hiragana s. It is only fair.
Also, they allow the JPs to use the little extraneous symbols such as the Note, Heart, Triangle and Solid Square, but we do not get them. They are located on one of the 'pages' of the soft-keyboard (or were in DC) when you set it to JP. There is no excuse to not include these on the non-jp language softkey set, as page 2 is loaded with blanks.
So why did they do it? I would say 1. Eliteism 2. Carelessness 3. They didn't think anyone would use it 4. They don't trust us not to swear at them in JP 5. Lazyness
It's anyone's guess, but all the reasons stink.

They get all the good stuff, yes. It's their game, but I suppose we're fortunate that they decided to share it with us. We just get the bottom of the barrel. =-.-=
Here's some nifty shortcuts in Japanse if you have a keyboard and don't want to take the time to sift through the software keyboard. Press the spacebar one or more times after entering the text to acquire the result...
onpu - Unsure of the exact translation, but it might mean to whistle. Entering this creates a musical note.
hoshi - Star. Entering this creates a star.
ase - Roughly translates to nervous. Entering this creates a number of sweat drop emotes.
wara - Literally means to smile. Entering this creates a number of smiling emotes.
bai - Romaji for bye. Entering this creates a number of waving emotes.

I think the standard set of Japanese fonts actually contains those symbols, while the English fonts do not. If you've done a little surfing with a Japanese font-capable browser, you'll see them commonly strewn about in webpages. I don't think it's a matter of bias, but rather a different standard of character sets.
However, it IS kind of annoying to have to switch to JP mode if you want to type in both English and Japanese. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

exactly - and i thought you could type japanese as long as you have a japanese keyboard, but thats obviously not so...
as for the extra-characters... well, they're not included in the ASCII-system so ST surely thought it would confuse, to have characters in the softwarekeyboard and not at the hardwarekeyboard...
btw... with my german dreamcast-keyboard the ^ is not supported... i always have to use the software-keyboard for that - so far my own explanation...
onpu means (afaik) 'musical note'. the purple haired girl in doremi is called onpu, btw ^_^
