Basicly a question for the Expansion.

I know PSU doesnt like slow connections but was wondering if Sega was doing anything with the expansion to be a little more 56k friendly?

Never understood why PSO for the DC and then PSO:BB would show very little lag on 56k ( basicly when picking things up but not all the time ) but PSU be very stingy in that regard.

I know , I know... Just get broadband but it isnt available where I am ( 8 miles from town and no DSL , WISP or Cable.. pathetic ).

Because PSO was developed at the time when 56k was a viable option for people.

Now it's very out dated, you're just out of luck i guess.

Ive heard of people on dialup modems but it's not even worth playing

The minimum speed is around 512k to play online

56k still exists?

Considering the majority of people still have to use 56K.. Yes it still exists.

Thats to bad though. Guess PSU will stay on the shelf. Still kinda of surpising that the game is that laggy considering I have a ping of around 300-500 on games like CoD ( No I dont play those games all the time - Maybe with a couple friends in a small match but my ping remains quite low for a 56K on a FPS in 16 player matches ). But on PSU my ping was probably around the 2500ms area.

PSU plays fine over dial-up, so long as you only have 4 people in the party. When there's a 5-person party, it becomes likely that the player on dial-up with drop, and when that 6th person joins, it becomes certain. Ian-kunX and I suspect that this is precisely why PSO's party limit was 4.

Other than menus loading slowly, and doing work with an inventory being arduous, PSU plays basically fine over 56k.

When I was on dial-up, I was lucky to get a 56k rate, probly shoulda' called the company or sommat, but I didn't have it that long.

I can't say I know a single person who still has dialup...

I always thought cause they made most of PSU stuff server side instead of client side.

Which is why changing weapons, using items can sometimes take so long.

On PSO, this was all done client side so it was usually quite fast, of course, other players was client side which meant they still ran about everywhere fighting non existent monsters.

But I dunno! It could just also be the shoddy coding on PSU.

There's no money in making things 56k friendly anymore. In order to do that you'd have to cut down on the game's potential, and considering the majority of your customers are at least DSL users, that won't happen.

I've been playing on 56k since the release. Most of the time I only play with 4 people. I think there is a half second lag but I'm use to it. My main char is capped in lvl and class. People find it hard to believe that I'm on dial-up. Some people call me the "dial-up wonder", lol

The USA and probably other countries seem to be far behind in terms of internet. Japan designed PSU with Japan's internet economy in mind. Dial-up no longer exists unless its on your cellphone connecting to webpages.

The best you can get, at optimal efficency, is a true 52.3kps on dial-up. Normal speeds are only 32kps. Quality of the phone lines is the number one cause of connections below 52.3k, though occasionally its also the server you dial in to, which then becomes a matter of degrading hardware or heavy usage.

I know earthlink tells their customers who complain about connection speeds how to make their modem show that its connection speed is 56kps. But its in display only. Some seem to like the state of mind though. *shrug*

Dial up worked in the Dreamcast days but I still had that nagging feeling I was always going to be dropped. Now that I'm on broadband after 900+ hours of PSU (360) I just had my first disconnect today.

If the April beta is used as a reference, Ambition of the Illuminus will be as dialup friendly as the current version of PSU. You can expect moderate lag in small parties.

Sega also has to fix up the silly slowdown issue in the story mode as well, because that can't be accepted and besides it's the story mode

I'm struggling to work out why in the world anyone would still be using dialup unless they live somewhere very, very, very remote.

It isnt just remote areas without access. Like I said in a previous post I live 8 miles from town with no Cable , DSL ( I guess they never installed a DSLAM anywhere ) or Wireless. Sometimes you read some posts on dslreports.com you will see some people that live in populated areas that dont get access either.

To bad though. I always liked the Phantasy Star series. I may pick up the expansion anyway since the offline mode seems to be handled a little better.
