Slots appear on armor only. If you open your item pack, highlight an armor, then press the R trigger you'll see a second status page. On the bottom it says slots. It can have between 0 and 4 slots.
There's a wide variety of units you can put in your slots. They basically do all sorts of things from raise stats, prevent status anomalies, and even increase your attack speed, to name a few. View the following link to see a detailed list of units.

An item with green text generally has some kind of status boost to it. Basically anything that has base (default or lowest possible) stats show up in white text with the exclusion of 9-star basic weapons and any special item, all of which show up in yellow text.
Feeding your MAG mono-s is fine but it's rather slow and may not progress the synchro or IQ scores. When you have the money it's better to use stronger food like di-s or tri-s. Experiment to see what works best for you both time and cost wise.

If an armor is green, that means it's Photon power enhanced. Basically, green armors and shields will always have a little more defense and evade stats than their white counterparts.
Sometimes, a green armor/frame will ALSO come with slots. You can check to make sure it has slots if you press R to scroll between its various stats; there should be a section that lists how many slots it can hold. Armors and frames can hold between 1 to four slots.
What do they do? They allow you to equip units into each slot. There are many different kinds of units, such as those that raise defense, attack and HP stats, and others that can increase spell level or attack speed. Units have an advantage over other pieces of armor in that they don't have any level requirement, so you can equip as powerful a unit as you want at any time, provided you have a free slot.
You'll find that slots become VITAL eventually. For example, equipping 4 General/HP units will boost your HP by 80 (20 each).
And lastly, if you want to add an extra slot to an armor, there's a rare item called "Add Slot" that you can use to actually permanantly add an extra slot to an armor with 3 or less slots. Very handy, but hard to find.

Far as your mag, well, it depends on your class. Monofluids will work great if you're a Force, but otherwise you'll wanna focus mainly on power if you're a Hunter or Ranger. Mono/di/trimates work great for boosting POW stats.
