View Full Version : PSU: PSU on 360! First impressions

So, I've played PSU on PS2 since day one, but I finally acquired an XBox360 on Sunday; which prompted me to try out PSU. Grabbed the game from work, popped it in the tray, set up my account, and let my gf take the reigns in creating a new character.

My eyes are SO confused as to what's going on on-screen.

It's like... the backgrounds look like backgrounds, while the characters themselves seem to be animated completely differently. O.o It's all much more fluid, but... it just looks so alien for some reason. It feels like I suddenly have terrible depth perception.

Don't get me wrong, it looks pretty awesome (though the control scheme is awkward), and seeing S-ranks for 6mil in player shops gave me fits of joy... looks like fun for AoI; our 360 account will be solely for recreation, when we don't feel like spamming our higher characters on PS2.

Any other users who play on both platforms? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif Anyone else notice any oddities when going back and forth? Anyone want to be a sponsor for us and our now-poor characters? XD DISCUSS! >:D

I posted this exact thing about 7 or 8 months ago since i played PSU from launch on ps2 then switched in jan to xbox it made the game very very enjoyable again the texture of the game blew me away Linearl line was awesome seeing glass on the ground and the reflection off the ceiling. congrats on making the move

its the least i can do is to donate something to you. do you want money or a weapon or something?

PSU for 360 copied the motto censor for PSU, which is a retarded move, why they couldn't have just used the one they have on PC/PS2 version I don't know (could be an xbox live game policy, I don't know), but it can be very frustrating at times.

The motto censor?

Sinue_v2
Sep 19, 2007, 12:37 AM
That might be due to the higher resolutions (if you're on HDTV) and increased frame rates. Wait till you get into the game itself and the framerate slows substantially. It seems to me as though the PS2 version has a low frame rate, but doesn't really chug until you get into intense combat or have a lot of players in the game. Then it becomes almost unplayable. The 360 version isn't quite as bad in this regard, but it has a very noticable framerate issue that is more consistant and annoying.

I prefer the PC version, myself.

PSU uses the same word censor microsoft has for it's motto editor, a motto is something that appears under your gamertag when someone looks at your gamertag, it's something like the titles here at PSOW.

ya the censor blow you cant say help either but by putting @ in front of your text box you can get around the censor so a

@ help me I'm on ps2 version....

that would bypass the censor even though help and ps2 are censored words.

Just tell me what your chatacer name is or where you are and I'll donate some cash to ya

Good to know the censor bypass is kinda the same as the PS2 version, but still mildly ridiculous.

Yeah, when I played the demo on 360 for the first time (and playing on ps2 at the time), I was seriously blown away by how marvelous PSU looked. Everything was flowing so smoothly, total eye candy compared to the PS2.

PC however looks even nicer(but you have to have a nice machine for it) I rarely get slowdown. Before I installed it for PC I was expecting it to look like the ps2 version but I was blown away as soon as I got into the game lol.

If you ever want that fluidness but still on PS2 servers go with PC. I once thought of doing what you are doing, but I don't have the wallet or time for that right now <_<

I looked for your room in the shop list. Since you're just starting out, I'm gonna go ahead and assume you don't have a shop yet which would make it kinda hard to get to your room. XD

Ah, to make the voice play through speaker you need to: Hit the Guide Button (Big X in the Middle of the Controller), go down to personal settings, go down to voice, once there put it on "Play Through Speakers." That should do it.

XenithFlare
Sep 19, 2007, 01:38 AM
Hrm. Swore I did that... though not for this game, if you need to set it for each game.

Just did it for Crackdown, I believe. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

lol, I'd muted all voice. XD I normally hate listening to people, but I guess it wouldn't be much of a good thing to have voice muted in this game.

It's set to 0 for 360. Most PC players have it set to 1 for a consistent framerate. I know I did back when I was on PC.

Some folks claim PC looks better. This isn't necessarily true. Sure, you can get a more consistent framerate and can bump up Anisotropic Filtering to 16x while 360 is limited to 4x, but it ignores 360's lack of environment pop-up in stages, and the ability to render ALL characters in a zone and not just up to 64 (though the framerate gets in the teens with 100 people in town). 360 also has more impressive graphical effects for when monsters zone in as well as distortion effects not present on PC at all. Distant background content is blurred, which eliminates that ugly pixelated look for the 640x480 resolution backgrounds which plagues the PC version.

The above coupled with superior sound quality makes 360 the definitive version to play from a graphics/sound point of view.

It's just a shame that it's coded so horribly that it doesn't run as well as it should at times :/

It's just a direct port of the PC version though, not like they coded it from ground up. If they had undertaken such a task, none of us would be playing the 360 version because it wouldn't have shipped. The 360 version was very much a last-minute decision.

The alternative would have been to not have PSU at all, because Sonic Team doesn't have the time or the resources to dedicate a team exclusively to writing PSU from ground up to take advantage of 360's hardware. Software development just doesn't work that way.

Just finished my first Plain's Overlord run on 360... level 5 when I went in, lv7 when I came out. XD I was pleasantly surprised, though; where on PS2 I'd have expected a Scape Doll board as a reward for finishing off De Ragan (currently my best item received while solo'ing S2. T_T Minus the THR board that dropped the very first -and last- time I went into that POS mission with a group), I managed to snag a De Ragan Tail, first run.

I get that they're not very rare, of course, but the fact is that I've done obscene amounts of S2 runs on PS2 without even so much as that damn tail dropping from that anxiety-ridden boss box. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif Already happy with my purchase.
