I was fixing a labtop for my girlfriends friend who somehow broke it, it was slow as all hell.

Since when is the last time something performed well with the minimum specs? I saw what XP was like on 256MB of RAM and a 450MHz processor, it wasn't pretty at all. Trying to run Vista on less than 1GB is the same thing. (OSX too)

Turning off processes works to some degree, until things that required other processes start breaking. Unless you know specifically what you're doing, that's not a wise thing to play around with.

More memory is definitely the best plan. It's extremely cheap now and rather straight forward to install. (I got 4GB for less what I paid for 2GB two years before)

Overall, I'm glad to be rid of XP although I do have it on an essentially unused drive in case I should need to boot into it for some odd reason.
