'A polar bear has white fur, but dark skin. Why does it have white fur, but black skin?'
It's to do with light
Any ideas?

The white fur reflects light away, and the dark skin absorbs it. This keeps a good temperature balance in the body of the bear.

Like, if the bear started shedding, its skin would absorb more light to compensate for the lack of insulating fur. When the fur grows back, it reflects the light to keep the bear from getting too warm.
