View Full Version : PSO GCN Discontinued?!

Well evidence is pointing to PSO GCN being discontinued. As if the game wasn't hard to find in the first place, several retailers are upping the price of the game because of the fact that Sega is stopping production supposedly.
Ebay.com has a couple of auctions up that Sega has officially announced that they will be canceling preorders and stopping production because of "online support problems."
Furthermore, major retailers such as ebgames.com don't even have the game listed on their site anymore, and Amazon.com is selling it for $100 and $99 used.
If anyone can shed anymore light on the subject, please post in this thread.

Here we go again.
Is anyone else here sick of these rumours? So far we've had rumours of the NA version of PSO being cancelled, the Broadband adaptor being discontinued Before it was even released!), the modem being discontinued, the Japanese version being discontinued (Which turned ou to be instead the Japanese version being UPDATED).
Do you have a link to some REPUTABLE news site that has this statement by sega, or was this something you heard from your local Electronic's Boutique salesman?
I find it VERY difficult to believe that if PSO is making money... which if the prices are being marked UP, indicates the demand is there for them to do so... that they would stop making the game. So far the cheating on this version of PSO is NOTHING compared to the Dreamcast version, which they still maintain servers for! right now they've got the jump of Final Fantasy XI and any other online console RPG, so why piss it away now? Especially with the Xbox version nearing release?
Personally, I think they're gearing up for a version exchange like they did with the Japanese players, to address the duping issue, and I DON'T think until we get some hard facts (i.e. News Links!) that anyone should panic about this.
Pure marketing genius. Not only does ST get people to buy the game three times, but they even get them to pay $100 for it. Man, I wish I were in the cut.

Thank you, Polenicus, you saved me the trouble of typing all of that. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Like I said in a previous thread... It makes absolutely NO sense... NO SENSE!... for PSO Episode 1&2 to be discontinued. Especially when it's sold a respectable amount of copies for an online game, and a pay-to-play one at that. Speaking of... Nintendo/ST must be making loads of dough off server fees.
Personally, I'm also wondering if they have some sort of "recall" thing planned, similar to the Japanese v1.1. Of course, that would screw things up overseas as they'd be stuck on our servers with all the dupes floating around, right? Ugh, the whole thing would be a headache.
Either that, or Nintendo is more full of crap than I've ever thought them to be.

they'll have to bust into my house and pry it from my cold, dead hands if they want to recall my copy
A free mag cell would be worth my hundreds of hours of gameplay! Sign me up baby!

Would you actually read my post thouroughly before making such statements, check ebgames.com for yourself, they don't even have the game shown on the site. I posted respectable websites that are definetely in tune with the game business, it's not like I gave you K-mart or Walmart. Three sites that are actually selling the game are stating the same exact thing, that's why I felt obligated to post. Infact, sega.com uses Amazon.com for purchasing the game.
You want a link? Here you go. It is news when it's coming from a site Sega is hosting
http://www.sega.com/games/post_gamegame.jhtml?PRODID=10113
then click on buy now, then click on "read more"

Hollowtip don't send submissions about this ever so getting old rumor that I'm embarrassed some of you actually fall for. Site links mean nothing to me, the only thing that would ever make a rumor like that true is a press release made by sega saying they are canceling this game. Anyhow I shall continue to ignore such idiotic submissions to our news as well as who posted that submission about the Gamecube itself being canceled, Yeah guy your sure gullable.

I don't see what's up with the bashing on this forum. Did I ever say it was being discontinued? Notice the question mark at the end of my topic? Yes that means I'm asking a question, and I personally don't appreciate the flaming when all I was doing was posting something that could be legitimate. Never said it was likely to happen. I don't see anything idiotic about the submission, stop jumping to conclusions because you have no idea what my objective on posting this in the forum was.
Really, sorry if I might(Let me emphasize the word even more might) be the bearer of bad news. Sega has pulled a lot of shit like this in the past, so I think its pretty relevant that I post something like this here.

It's also New Years Day, you most likely won't see any real news being posted until tomorrow at least anyway.

erupt: Did you hear that they're not allowing anyone to play as HUs online anymore because people running around with pointy objects is a bad influence on little kids! It's true! I swear!
(Seriously, though, the Amazon.com and Ebgames.com thing is because they're out of stock. The $99 at Amazon is from one of the small stores that Amazon hosts which is trying to make a rip-off profit BECAUSE there's such a demand for the game. PSOGC is not discontinued, it's out of stock cause it's so damn popular. Sorta like Furbies and Tickle-me-Elmo.)

I'd like to point out that games aren't continually manufactured. Demand has to be quite high before a company will decide to do another run of a title. This is what makes series like Armour Core or Harvest Moon, so sought after in the used market. If you don't buy them when they come out (or shortly after) then you aren't going to be able to (exception being, "greatest hits" reprints). Of course, some places may happen to have a few copies floating around, but retailers can't order more.
Having said that, I was able to restock PSO the week before Christmas.

i just saw on the news that a kid tried to hold up a gas station with a varista +9, he screamed "GIMME ALL YOUR PHOTON DROPS OR ILL WASTE YOU". quite troubling, and has prompted sega to take extreme action (i.e. take all the pso ep 1&2 copies and burn them in a giant bonfire that is being blessed by a priest and a rabbi)
