Does one seek battle to gain power, or gain power to fight?

What would you do? Seek battle to gain power, or gain power so you can do battle?
One can liken it to states, one who seeks battle to gain power (Iran, The Empire of Japan) or gain power to fight (The Present State of the US)

Why do something if you feel like you're not going to get something out of it that will benefit yourself or someone else?

The answer seems obvious.

I seek battle to gain power. I enjoy challenges to test my limits, because, as a young man, I am always believing I have no limits, and want to escape that.

Gaining power to fight indicates that you have to fight someone or something. I always know my place among people, and am forced to accept it. If I want a change, I change. So far...I'm perfectly fine with my position among people.

You're nuts calling Japan an empire. They aren't even allowed to have a military except for self-defense anymore, and a limited one at that!
