Or just surround the food in barbed wire.

Put it someplace very high where they can't reach it.

I can say that this does not work well for dogs. My little brother left a plate of spicey hot death wings on the table and left for about three minutes. When he came back, they were all gone, and my dog Hank was sitting there licking his lips.

Or, you know, you could just not let the cats get to the plates in the first place.

Spicy things don't work a lot of times. We tried to use what was essentially pepper spray on bushes to keep the rabbits from eating them. Needless to say, not only did it not work, they ate more of the plants. We eventually gave up after trying a number of alternative methods and just planted some flowers they refused to eat.

Try having citrus around, a lot of cats hate that...except my one cat. He loves to eat fruit and I don't know why. I was eating a turkey sandwich and a bowl of grapes once and he went for the grapes and not the sandwich. I've also caught him trying to eat a watermelon on numerous occasions.

yeah, a freind of my sis has a dog that likes hotsauce. The dog always chews on a corner of their stairs. Their dad put howsauce on it to discourage the dog, it had the exact opposite effect.

Apparently, everything that cats supposedly don't like has a basis in that it's either mildly or heavily toxic (to them). http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Spray bottles could work, but the cat will probably just try to kill you while you sleep.
