View Full Version : Elf Pride?

Gee. Am I the only one who sees the transition Numans have undergone as a natural development of becoming their own established species? I'm not blind to the fact that the Newman culture is a replacement goldfish for the Dezorians, but seriously now.

It'd be kind of strange if instead, after achieving their own demographic, they became this sort of all-female kittycat race that lived as strays or adopted into the families of the urban society that Humans and CASTs live in.

Though given their feral nature in PSII and IV, if they were given no development, they'd probably fit in better with the society of Beasts.

Edit: Whoa. What the heck happened here? Jifre, what happened to your opening post?

Oops! In an effort to delete the post just so I could try and edit one of the poll options to "Newmans aren't elves, dammit!", my original post got deleted but left a post by F-Gattaca which kinda makes HIM look like the topic poster when it's actually me! Heheh..

Okay, here's my original post again:
Some discussion on another thread regarding the Newmans/Space Elves has simply gotten me to thinking...how many of you newmans are damn proud of the beautiful elven forms you have now, and how many of you newmans wish to harken back to the also-beautiful half-monsters of your old Algolian ancestors, perhaps resenting that you're...well, elves now?

Being a human who's seen the old Numan and new Newman, I believe Newmans (since PSO) take no small part in representing much of the bastardization of the classic Phantasy, having reduced the exotic, pretty uniuqe race into a simple stereotype of a more common race. This being said however, I've grown to like what the Newmans have become (not stats-wise, mind you http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif) since space elves, regardless of their previous origins, still are pretty kickass, make excellent companions, and will CONQUER THE GALAXY! *ahem* probably.

And, many Newmans probably don't even know much of the original Numans anyway. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif So uhh yeah. I've seen a lot of discussion of old Numan fans, but let's see some of the proud space elves come outta the woodwork! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Jife, I had my chance to play the old Phantasy Stars, but I blew it. I was too spoiled with my NES to care for the series, mmmm Metal gear, good memories. So I never cared to go back to tried them. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

And Jife, you know me well. I enjoy elfness, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I enjoy the cutesiness of the ears, and not many games have anyone like that. So I prefer to be an elf. I ain't no damm warrior type, esp. playing a gimped one http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I love the whole elf thing. I guess you can either thank or blame Deedlit from Record of Lodoss War since she's the one who got me into elves and all that (man, Deedlit is so friggin hawt <3).

Nothing in PSU comes close to the awesomeness of Nei. Not in design, function, or depth. NM-2011 wasn't bad either.

Numen absolutely should be returned to their roots, rather than continue to pander to a played-out stereotype which has nothing at all to do with Phantasy Star.

Are you saying you actually had a chance to play the original Master System version!? Damn, that's rare indeed...I never even knew about that system until the late Genesis days. (and never got to play the SMS one till it got ported to the GBA and even then the grind factor kept me at bay for a while until I tried again and found that the grinding isn't needed after a certain point early in the game!)

But back on topic, Raine, you really (indirectly http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif) helped me get over the resentment I had for the space elves that started since the PSO days (just being one of the many hopes I had that PSO dashed, though PSU has made a FEW reparations). I've come to accept them and like them despite how they've pretty much been relegated to a mere role or two. And since I knew how much you like the ears (and some other elf fans chimed in), I decided to make a little poll here about how many other newmans are proud of the elfness and how many still desperately cling to the old Numan race.

Numans were a pretty awesome genetic twist on humans, I loved that. I also loved that they weren't as populated. Buuut, I do think newmans are still pretty cool. So I'm torn.

Oh boy, I've been waiting for a topic like this! Just to say something like...

"You can't HIDE that Elf/Newman PRIDE you've got deep INSIDE, and until the day that worlds should DIVIDE, together onward we will RIDE!" http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Um... yeah. I think Newmans are much better the way they are. Nice, refined, and elegant (well, the non-ugly crafted ones anyways).

I think that newmans are better than numans. If the newmans reverted back, then they would be too similar to beast. Besides, when I think of Newmans, I think of Link from the legend of zelda series, and he kicks arse (using magic and good sword skills, both are something newmans can pull off). So Newmans are the future.

The Numans of olde were awesome, and while I'm fine with them getting a little tech speciality, PSU did really overdo it.

But, rather than bemoan the misfortune, I just went HUney like I did in PSO before. Made my character, turned her pure Hunter and never looked back.

Catgirls or elves? Tough choice http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

I probably prefer Newman to Numan, but for a few reasons. First, my introduction to Phantasy Star wasn't the originals, but PSO. I loved the backstory to them in PSO too, so I got really interested in playing one. In PSU, I don't really like what ST have done though, in making the Newmans pretty much Techers-only. Maybe the stat rebalancing on the 16th will fix that, at least I hope so. I also hate how they lack any real story in PSU, and are just another race. I guess I made a melee Newman character as somewhat of a homage to HUnewearl from PSO (regretting it, no-one lets you in parties http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif )

If I had been introduced to Phantasy Star through the originals, maybe it'd be a different story. I do try and play the originals a bit now, but I guess it's hard to get used to so many years later.

I liked the orginal concept of the numans much better...but mostly because I fell in love with Nei and Rika. So I had always thought of the race as a whole being a fighter orented, frag fest class. I know a lot of people hate me when I say "elf" both here AND in the game itself....but really thats what they are now. Beasts have taken over as the numans of old (not nearly as good looking sadly) and will probably stay that way too.

Thats not to say I haven't accepted what newmans are now. My main is a newman and none to sane on top of it. Just it took a lot of getting use to in PSO and PSU. Of course Segas excuse for that is both games are alternate dimentions and have nothing to do with the story of the orginal Phantasy Star. Being an elf isn't bad...its just not completely true to the roots that spawned it thats all, and thats the only real beef I have with what newmans are now.

Actualy I guess thats my issue with PSO/U in general...but thats a rant for another time.

It still just completely baffles me how Sonic Team can take a unique and well loved mythos and, over time, shit on it completely in the sake of being more stereotypical so as to pander to an audience that isn't even largely interested in Phantasy Star to begin with.

I mean... Phantasy Star made it's name by breaking molds. Now it seems like it's just turning it's back on it's heritage so that it can become a cheap "me-too", satisfied with picking up the sales crumbs left over from the real players.

It woulda' been kinda' neat had they reverted them to their classic style and made humans or beasts the teching oriented race.

To be fair, they do need the money.

Sega's in a postion that it's gonna bring them money regardless.
What's with the new/nu thing? It's a trnaslation thing, Newman in katakana is Numan. >_>
That's shit is like Nero/Nelo Angelo...

Weeaboolits

Additionally, and correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the romaji "nyuman"? If so wouldn't that suggest "newman" as the proper spelling even more strongly? My suspicion is that the original numan spelling was likely due to space constraints.

Sapce constaints seems to be the most likely culprit.

Sinue_v2
Nov 12, 2007, 11:12 AM
Except that they're referred to as Numen in printed material as well as other sources. I don't think it's a case of poor translation such as the "Noah/Lutz" debacle - as they never bothered to correct it in later games which did not have the space constraints.

ShinMaruku
Nov 12, 2007, 11:24 AM
Capcom did the same with Nelo/Nero Angelo and they just rolled with it, I think at that time it was like that. But it's all how you want it rendered.

I prefer the classic Numans and would love to see them make a comeback, but I'm aware it probably won't happen. At least they're getting an ATP boost in AoI.

And the person who said they'd be too much like Beasts if that happened, think again, because the classic Numans, as I've already stated, were skilled in melee and techs. So, no, they wouldn't be like Beasts, at all.

Zorafim
Nov 12, 2007, 11:29 AM
The reason I call the Numen is because once they start being called "newmen", they suddenly became proficient with magic and deficient with melee. It's just a way to differentiate the two, in other words.

You mean giving Newmans a culture that's stereotypically "Historical Japanese" while a nod to the Dezorians of old?

I don't think they were pandering to Western "otaku" by doing so. At its worst, Newman culture is guilty of succumbing to the "Ubiquitous Japanese Village in an Inappropriate Setting," buuut even that is kind of iffy within the context of the story. I mean, we all know what ST was doing when they designed the Newman culture, but from the in-character perspective, it's possible ...

If you buy into the concept that Gurhal (and Coral/Ragol) society are far-flung descendants of Algol society, it's very possible for all these changes in Numans to happen.

Sorry guys, while I'm mildly sympathetic to people who wish Newmans weren't so stereotypically Japanese and more like their classic roots, I have to do this in response to those who say "ST shit on the story out of greediness" or what not:
