View Full Version : How large is the PSU population on Japan's servers?

Anyone know the server population before and after AoI's JP launch?

When PSU Global started up, it had about 9 stars across two universes, but it dropped to only about 3.5 on good days. Do you think AoI will give a decent boost to the population?

Also, just for kicks, what's the Xbox population size right now?

Yeah, that looks like about last night's numbers. The server merge only happened Thursday morning US time, and that's the post-merge universe list, so. XP

Another question about AoI:

Does it have a serial number or way of confirming that you own a unique copy of the expansion? Or is it like the original PSU release and doesn't have anything?

Not only is their community larger, there's less stuck-up jerks who'd have you up against a wall faster than you can take your pants down over there. I've never been booted from a JP party over there, whereas I can't even count on my fingers and toes how many times I've been booted from US parties just by joining an open game...

JP PC version always had a serial number, for both the original and AoI now.

Maybe they figured so few people would buy the game why scare away any people who would pay for a GL but not the game.

It's really sad. They need to get some advertising going for this game.

I mean, it's not that hard.

The question is, is AOI going to boost the population or decrease it when it comes to north america because people wont buy the new game. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

And why has the PC/PS2 version done anything at all to promote the game. No demos, no betas, no free items for signing up, nothing.

All mmos here are in the toilet. Why? Because of WoW.
As long as that exists, people will be drawn to it, because all their friends play it. Nothing Sega can really do to stop that.
Plus PSU got incredibly horrid reviews at launch. There's no way we'd ever match JP like this.

Consider this, all the major japanese gaming companies reside there.

Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, Namco, Capcom, Tecmo, etc.

I don't know thier exact population numbers, but I imagine it is half of the US population.

" small " ? it's the size of california, and about half the population of america. and are mainly all city bred and savy, meaning unlike us, it isn't 2 cities( nyc/ la, that have all the non-stupid people, then boondocks in between)

The real benefit of the mass of players here is the economy in my opinion. I hear on the US you have to do alot of trading to get really good items. Over here you could pretty much buy anything in a player shop at one point or another. And the larger supply leads to a more competitive market for things which = lower prices overall.

It's not horrible, but you will notice the lag, especially in your room when storing items, feeding your PM, or doing an item search.

i remember when i first went on the servers shortly after AOI was released. I was going to my room through the uni cube and i asked my friend if my game froze up because of how long it was taking XD

but yea i think their maintenances take like twice as long as ours XD

I've had the JP version for a while. A good 70 bucks wasted(imported). Didn't like the idea of relying on someone give me netcash. Also..considering how far my character has come..I can't turn back now.

JP PSU players > FFXI JP players.

JP PSO players didn't care if you didn't speak the language. All they wanted was equal respect and teamwork. So I gather it is no different with JP PSU players.

Is it really surprising how high their population is compared to the 'rest of the world' server? I remember shortly before I left PSOGC how the US and EU servers combined were rarely reaching much over 400 people and there were countless times where it was just slightly over a dozen in the EU servers with less than 100 on the US. Meanwhile the Japanese servers would rocket to nearly 5000 on weekends, and this was not nearly as high as it was when I first joined.

PSU is an older style game. It's not really a MMORPG. Parties are small, it's dungeon based, and there's a definite battle world and non-battle world aspect to it. And while those type games are still popular in Japan (not to mention well advertised and covered) outside of Japan a small group of MMORPGs rule the market through massive advertising campaigns, lots of users convincing others to join up, and incredible network infrastructure. Sega's only advertisement for the most part has been word of mouth and a handful of reviews with mediocre results. They feel that the non-Japanese crowd won't make up the advertising spent so they just don't do it and thus PSU rots in obscurity while the alternatives rake in the cash.

Just to clear things up about the Japanese population, they are approaching 130,000,000. That puts them down at 10th largest in population and over 1/3 the population of the US. So, yeah, they've got a lot of people and yes they are primarly in urban zones. They have one of the best network infrastructures in the world (television, telephone, internet mainly) and a huge portion of their population (compared to most other countries) is on broadband. So, like I say, it's hardly surprising that a game from there would be extremely popular there.

I'd like to think that Sega of America's GMs are trying to be good at their jobs ... but it won't bring back the population we used to have. Rather, the bad reviews (previously mentioned), lack of advertising, and the hacking spree in December of last year are more likely the causes of NA/Int'l PSU's stunted growth.

We lost a lot of people to the hacking spree, and it seems we'll never truly regain the population we lost.

Wow. I just ... yeah. Wow.

I wonder what kind of games this guy likes, and how he'd feel to know that many high profile game developers are located in the "stupid boondocks" of the U.S.

And that's not even thinking about Silicon Valley and Seattle + Redmond ... Maybe we should call them the Silicon Boondocks! Brainless hicks pioneering the information age!
