What is it about PSO that makes it so hard to put down? I mean, I don't have a modem to play online yet, and I've had the game since the day after christmas, and already, I've played about 100 hours. Jeez. I can't wait to get online. The game can honestly be summed up in two words: kill stuff. But it's a very kick-ass game, none the less. w00t.

Alot of us have been playing since Vers 1 on the DreamCast. o_O
Version 1, Version 2, PC version, GC version.
I think they call us PSO-Whores for a reason. 0_o
It's just a heavily addicting game. Everything about it. I mean, it's not a massive game by any means, and it's almost the epitome of "repetive"...but it's just too damn enjoyable overall to put down.
PSO is this centuries Pong! =o

I've been playing since day one on Version 1, and almost two years later, here I am once again with another load of characters. I'm taking a much needed break for a few days, an' then I'm gonna get my three lower leveled guys to Ultimate ASAP.
And I prefer the term "PS Hoe". http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
PSO is so irresistible because of FOnewearls, of course. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_hamster.gif

1. Character Creation- It doesnt have the full character creation capabilites as some wrestling games for examples, but as far as online RPGs go, PSO easily is the deepest and besides, it'd be a bit silly seeing someone like the Hulk as a fonewm or something. It's that whole design aspect, as well as being able to...well, "dress up" so to speak, with cool weapons, armors, mags and even shields now. It's a single thing that a surprsing number of games have NOT allowed, but it goes a long way in putting the "Role Playing" into RPGs.
2. Depth of character classes- Funny thing is, at the higher levels of any character/class, i tend to get a bit bored of pso. So, I stop playing as a fomarl, start playing as a Humar-BAM! whole new game, almost. Start playing as a Ramarl, wow, i like this class. Then, after it gets repetitve, start a fonewearl, etc, etc. It's a small thing, but more people I know than not have at least two characters. It's something that really can give new life to any PSO version I play at any time.
3. RARES!!- Rare stuff is something that only seems to apply to RPGS, and to a lesser stuff adventure games. PSO though utilizes a non-random random system of dropping rares, so you're always looking for them, and excited when you get a new one, and now you even have a better of idea of how to get them. Offline it isnt much, but online it is something nice to talk about, show off, lust for, trade for, etc.
4. Communication + Unity = Community= The (sorta) social aspect. Back on (lets face it "plain") version 1, you could use for nothing else but a pretty chatroom. you can find dicussions of games, movies, animes, whatever. People with your same sense of humor, or taste in music. You can talk about anything, to anyone, and becuase of Sonic Team, to anyone in the world. (I believe PSO is fairly unique in its effort to let people in any country, talk together.)
5. I dont know. It's just weirdly addictive. I can say I'm sick of leveling, yet ill be back there getting moeny for my new mag. We can do the episode 2 stuff, then move onto C mode for a few days.

its the most streched and detailed game i know of - you can put hours over hours in it and its not getting boring - then on top of this is onlinemode...
well, i was on almost the whole night yesterday and mostly i chatted ^_^; about gods, the world and polyamid in baked foods - a whole new aspect.

Personally I love this game and just about ever feature it has. Offline is even fun for me, I suppose that's why I can stand playing the offline version on my GC. While I do love offline, online is where I think PSO for me just shines too bright. I've spent too many hours online with this game laughing it up with good friends while taking out monsters left and right. I think that is one thing that really adds to this game is being able to have your friends online with you to go through all the rooms and just have a good time. Indeed it is pretty much the same through and through, but there is something about this game that just makes you keep coming back.

Heh. Although I am getting a bit irritated at how hard ultimate is for me. any suggestions on what level I should be, and should I look for any specific weapons? I'm currently lvl 72, and I have yamato, and angry fist.

1) characters - very see reasons in starter post
2) urge to kick ass - I see alot of people kicking ass with hunewearls and fonewearls, etc. and I think to myself "DAMN! I want to kick that much ass!", so I play more to get stronger.
3) Rares - just knowing that perhaps maybe, just MAYBE in that box, there could be something you've been looking for, or not, makes me want to search every room. Besides, WC needs her kickass guns.
4) People - Fun to play online with good friends
5) Simplicity - no set story to follow, hell you can make your own - only set plots that have little to do with it are within the optional quests. You can always go back should you have missed something, a simple but fun battle system as well. A good variety of enemies, despite alot of them being nothing but reskins.
5) Easy on the mind - many can RPG's get really boring (Golden Sun) after a few hours into it, always having to follow some objective. With PSO, you do whatever you want.
6) Easy on the eyes - lots of eye candy
7) Define your own character - see: fanworks, rp'ers - kind of gives your character a "soul" so to say.
http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_cool.gif Variety of classes - get bored of playing one class after awhile? Can switch to another for a bit with no penalty. (I constantly switch between RAcaseal and FOnewearl)

At its core, PSO is an ultra shallow game that offers nothing innovative; however, it dose do a good job at targeting two common aspects of online games, which is the community and the items.
There is the concept of playing the game with other people. Some you get along with and others you don't. It's different than solo games, and really adds the replay value, and is the one thing that makes online games the most addictive kind of game.
The other aspect is the items. ST is targeting the gamer's desire to obtain items, which is quite powerful - And also leads to the demise of the game in that most are willing to cut corners and accept dupes/cheats.
All in all, it's about the replay. If you get tired of one thing in the game, there's something else to do, whether it be just chatting in the lobbies, item hunting, challenge mode, etc.

and i might add: if you really get bored some time, simply start a new character ^_^; i did that 9 times so far and its always something new, since every character-class is unique.

The...err...uhhh...the story. No, really! That's my favorite thing about PSO, and it's the number one reason I'm buying PSOep1+2. It's the continuing saga of the Algolians and their never-ending battle against evil. PSO has a *wonderful* story, and, with the clues about Episode II that Soul of Steel gave, I can't wait to play Episode II.
And after story it would be...leveling up my character(s), I suppose...that's always fun. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

There HAS to be some sort of subliminal messaging or something... When you DO think about it in retrospect... Almost like the point of view a review for a game magazine should use... Then it seems awfully stale. Like the game SHOULD suck after 100+ hours... But it doesn't. It continues to 0wn all ass, and suck the bloody life out of you! As a matter of fact... *Gets off to go play*

First a little history :
I've been playing since DC version 1 and well, here I am again. I was into DC version 1 since day 2 (didn't get a chance to get out the first day) and played up until the free ISP's (at the time) died out and I couldn't get on-line, this was happening sometime around when v2 came out I think. I haven't been on this site, and in the PSO scene much until a few days before I got the GC Episode 1 & 2. I began playing the DC version 1 again; much to my own horror unfortuately...
Ok... Why PSO is so irresistible :
The whole idea is great. From the DC days to now, a console on-line RPG! Here are the reasons summarized into little segment things :
- DC version 1 at least, from day one until the "post apocalypse" final days it's on-line have been an interactive chat room. With all the hacking going on on the DC version, I saw lots of people who just enjoy chatting with others in the lobby. This is tougher in the GC one if you don't have a keyboard but... we manage.
- The teamwork concept. With the exceptions of challenge and battle mode, everyone works together.
- The hunt for rares. Playing the same area over and over trying to discover the fabled item you overheard someone talking about.
- The idea of playing with complete strangers from the comfort of your home. While this is nothing new on PC, there's just something magical about sitting at your TV with a controller in your hand interacting with all sorts of people.
- The style of the game. A futuristic sci-fi setting with anime style.
- The gameplay. As someone else said, it doesn't become overbearing on you. You don't HAVE to advance to the next area. You can simply stay in let's say... Forest and level up and do whatever you want. It's almost completely non-linear.
- The suprises. Venturing out, even off-line is never the same. Different rares, different experiences with the monsters, different area configuration.
This is mostly stuff others have already said, oh well.
