Anyhow, they were a bit forgotten in Ep II - but I've seen screenshots where the COG (or all of Neudaiz, I don't recall) is surrounded by a LSS - so they're going to play a larger role in Ep III. We just haven't gotten to that point in the story where they play a prominent role, and what bits we do see isn't fully explained yet.

And I doubt Rutsu is a villan. He probably knows more about what's really going on than anybody, so he doesn't get caught up in these menial Guardians missions because he already knows it wouldn't do any good - and possibly ruin whatever effective plans he has to actually combat the SEED. For instance, not wanting to let the Maiden put herself into danger to find the Neudaiz Confinement system. It wasn't because he was apathetic and cared only for the image of the Communion and his place in it - it's because he knew it was an unnecessary risk which wouldn't get rid of the SEED.

But that's just a guess. I find it more likely than him being a villan.

My thought is that Rutsu will be a villain in terms of trying to use the divine maiden to fight Dark Force, claiming Ethan/Laia/You aren't strong enough to fight it, so you have to fight him to prove yourself and he'll entrust Ethan/Laia/You with magical gizwots to fight with http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Interesting. I could see that, considering the character reference, he could take on the role similar to that of Master Tajim - but with a more active hand in the fate of the system. Like Tajim, you'll have to fight him to prove your worth.

Saner: As far as I know, Karen willingly took the place of Mirei Mikuna. Considering that she's the new Divine Maiden, it didn't stop her from meeting with Ethan when needed.
