Does anyone know what the 8 buttons are for in the Boss battle?

I hear they move the raft, and you can even ram DeRolLe with it.

I like the ingenuity of this, adding to the strategy and whatnot, but something tells me that asshats in random party will get a half-stiffy out of moving the raft into unsafe locations....
