the xbox live card and microsoft points are two completely different things. The xbox live card is for your gold subscription which comes in either a 1 year or 3 month version (I would generally say get the 1 year subscription as costs less overall than 4 x 3 month cards.) Now the microsoft points are used for purchasing content via the marketplace (Gamerpics, themes, movies, the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion) Both of these can be picked up at videogame stores and most Best Buys generally.

how do i pay for the monthly psu fee, and how much is a gold subscription?

You'll need a credit card to pay for your monthly PSU fee or a debit bank card etc with Visa/Mastercard logo. A gold subscription is like 49.99 for 1 year either by the card or via a yearly recurring credit card payment.

Do note, that the gold XBox live isn't needed for PSU. At least, I'm pretty sure it isnt. (PC player here)

Nope its pretty much credit card only for the PSU fee. And Randomness is right about the only needing Silver membership however you'll need gold membership if you are going to download the expansion addon.

Xbox Live Gold isn't needed for PSU. As for points, you can buy them online straight through your 360 if you need to.

However they wouldn't be too useful if he couldn't access the marketplace on Silver membership. Also if you don't have a credit/debit card then you are not going to be able to purchase a guardian's license. Sega needs to bill you 9.99 monthly and they don't accept Microsoft points or anything besides a valid CC.

Ah. My bad, then.

Hmm.. according to xbox.com you should be able to use the marketplace with a silver membership, though I could have sworn I've heard storied to contradict this. But hopefully it works.
Though it says under gold membership there are "Exclusive privileges in the xbox marketplace"

Or a debit/bank card if you open a checking account your bank generally gives you one of these.

I'm sure the exclusive privileges were access to the content first, and being able to download trials... but don't quote me on that, I don't have a silver account.

If you don't have a credit card, you could buy a visa gift card and use that, just make sure you have enough on it for a lot of months, it's pretty much impossible to transfer lol.

You can access the marketplace with a silver account. Mine is silver, and I had no problems downloading AoI or playing it.

Yeah I noted in a later post that it might be possible to get it via silver membership. Sometimes Xbox/MS can be weird in their stressing of "perks" for gold members.

The only advantage gold members get over silver members for PSU is access to the beta for giveaways like the Tails/Amy/Knuckles Dolls. Other than that, it is the exact same game for both memberships.
