I'm not "oogly" either. I used to work at an Electronics Boutique on the managerial staff, and I was known as the "Sega Girl". One day, I was wearing a Sega Dreamcast hat and a Dreamcast polo shirt -- one which was only available to Sega representatives at E3 -- and a guy ran into the store yelling "I LOVE YOU!".
Well, um, I didn't exactly love him back, so, I smiled and quietly hoped he would go away. Eventually, he did.
So I'm about average when it comes to looks, I'd say. I'm not overweight, I'm not short, and I don't have a moustache, so I'd say I'm doing pretty good. And I love the hell out of videogames.
Most of my friends are male, understandably; I dealt with countless bimbos while working at Electronics Boutique. They would come up to me and say, "like, God. Can you believe these guys like this shit so much? Videogames are so stupid."
I think they were expecting a sympathetic partner. I just smiled and went in the back room to shrink wrap things. It was my escape route.

Aah, I know how it is. I think I'm the only girl in my school who plays video games, so I tend to hang out around the guys (even getting labeled as part of the popular guys' clique). The girls all think video games are a waste of time, and then they excuse themselves to fix their hair or makeup. I counted and they spend over an hour doing that every day. What strikes me as amusing as that I've gotten more requests to go out than they have.
The only problem is that I get ridiculed for my Dreamcast shirt. Sony fanboys... -.o;
Good for you! Do what you enjoy doing and forget those dumb popular girls that are only interested in doing their hair!

I'm a guy... My 'group' includes about 3 girls who are all fairly common gamers. One of them has PSO, she was even the one that introduced me to it! She doesn't have GC PSO yet, but she will... Eventually. And quite a few more play some games and know a bit about them, but aren't hardcore gamers, like me. ^.^;; I think that internet relationships are fine ((Even though I've never been in one, and don't plan to)) and I also tend to get along better with females... But that's just me.

Oooh. That reminds me of a hilarious story.
At our store, there was one insanely irritating kid who would keep on coming back, loudly berating good games and lusting over crap like "Carnivores" for the PC. He was very obese, and always wore tight, short shorts, a wifebeater T-Shirt, and never combed his hair. All in all, he was a rude kid. Now, I have nothing against people who are, by health standards, overweight... in fact, I think large guys like the lead singer for "Smashmouth" are attractive, but nonetheless, on to my story.
This kid and one of his friends decide to come up to me one late-winter day, when I'm wearing my Sega Dreamcast launch team letterman jacket. Only a few hundred of them were made, and I bought my baby on eBay in pristine mint condition. Well, I was wearing it then, and one of them said, "Hey, that's a great jacket!" There was a pause, and then they added, "Too bad it doesn't say "Sony" on it."
I was ready to rip that kid a new ass. Unable to think of a good comeback, I just spit out something pathetic like, "If it did, I wouldn't be wearing it". They laughed and went away.
Of course, they always kept coming back to our store, being as utterly irritating as one could be. The one I described above was by far the worst, and he was incredibly rude to our customers, and always trashed the store.
Over half a year later, on Halloween, the "devil's fat kid" came into the store. My friend, who was also the store's Assistant Manager (ASM), was dressed as a hardcore punker, and had an old, worn-out "Akira" shirt on. Although he was really trying to show modern punks what a true punk looks like, he wore the Akira shirt and told anyone who didn't get it that he was an Akira-themed gang member.
Now, as I am a huge Sega fan -- and so is he -- he is a tremendous "Akira" fan. (It's not my bag, although I love anime, but he thinks it's the best anime movie ever.) The kid came up to him and said, ""Akira" sucks. You look so stupid. Why would anyone dress up like that?" and started laughing at him.
So the ASM shouted, "Well, I was going to go as a FAT KID, but YOU BEAT ME TO IT!"
The store was awfully silent from that day forward.

I'm a female as well.
I'm use to being pretty much the lone girl playing video games, at least while I was going through school. In elementry there were a couple, in middle there was none and same goes with high school. They all thought I was nuts that I would rather spend time with my consoles than at some sleep over doing makeovers and stuff. And I generally hung out with guys too, but very few in high school even liked them. Some of them would even ask why I liked video games. :/
Even in college still I'm the loner. Fortunately I know a few guys there who love video games so I'm not completely alone. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
And any girl/woman that walks into a video game store to get her brother/father/boyfriend or what have you a gift and says they are stupid needs to be... I dunno, but some harsh punishment. :/ I'm tempted to work at Babbages or EB soon... it would be heaven to work in a store with video games all around. ^_^
I said this in another post: Unless you are having sex gender DOES NOT MATTER. And even then, why let gender stand in the way of true love?

I know a female friend who works at a game store.
You had better be prepared to deal with drooling fanboys and whatnot. Some male customers come in and buy stuff just because of what you say. Being a girl gamer is currently a minority.

The target/average SIMS player is a female over the age of 24, and they make up over 60% it's userbase. I guess you can argue over if the SIMS is a game or not, but to generally say that girl gamers are the minority is simply uneducated.

What, the poll's statistics aren't enough for you?
Look at who the games are targeted to. Do you think that GTA was designed with a largely female audience in mind? As much fun as it is running over people, I'm guessing that was more aimed at the guys. Have you noticed that most games star male characters?
If you want statistics, find them yourself, but a quick look around can tell you that gamers are generally young men. The few games that are specifically for girls are generally things like, say, Barbie's Supermodel.
Feel free to stomp all over my argument, that's just what it seems like to me.

Look at Nintendo's "kiddy" game lineups. By this logic they must be trying to pwn the 6-8 yr. old bracket.
Speaking of GTA, I think they captured how women drive perfectly.
Have you noticed that most games star male characters?
Metroid Prime, SC: Ghost, Blood Rayne, Tomb Raider, RE:0... do you want me to research more or do the ones off the top of my head count?

Give Barbie better graphics and I'll gladly play it. Kinda like how the average Britney Spears fan is the 35 yr. old male.

Spy don't be a retard--most games do have male characters or AIMED towards males. Bloodrayne? Vampire chick with bouncy tits. Lara Croft? Adventure chick with bouncy tits.
Most games with female leads are intended to be played by males...think any females were interested in the "nude" trick in tomb raider back in the day? (besides lesbians--another minority...sadly)
To say there's more female gamers then male gamers is the craziest thing I've heard. (In the past 5 mins)
And about attention whores...you have no room to talk Spy. You say stupid crap just to get attention ALL THE TIME. Don't go yelling at them because they're claiming to be a girl gamers.

I think some of you may be surprised about the number of female gamers. According to this interview (http://www.womengamers.com/interviews/idsa.html), 43% of PC gamers and 35% of console gamers are female.
I don't understand the big gender riot. I couldn't really care less about to whom a game is supposedly aimed. I play games I like, period.

Darn numbers, looks like there won't be a PSOW dating service. =P
Anyway, about this Girl Gamer subject... most statistics I've heard puts them in the minority. However, they're definitely a growing minority, partially because games like The Sims reach out to girls and partially because the (non-physical) boundaries between the genders in our society are becoming more and more blurred.
Anyway, the only girl gamer I'm good friends with in real life doesn't play video games much anymore, because back in HS, she got a little too addicted to a MUD...
And in case you haven't figured it out yet, I am a guy.

Yeah, that was probably going too far. No further though than implying that a game where people run stuff down is directly marketed towards males.
Interesting-semi related facts: The Washington State Patrol determined that out of all road-rage incidents within the past 5 years, 63-66% involved women drivers.
The car-insurance analyst profession boasts having positions filled by women 85% of the time. I'm thinking that is the real reason why men pay more on car insurance then women.

I can see your point, to an extent... I would say the ability to regain your health by having sex with hookers is pretty much focused on the male 13-30 demographic. I can't see too many women really enjoying that aspect of the game.

This is the common way characters are presented. Many male videogames characters are tall boys with muscles, nice face and a nice, well rounded, butt.
This is just the standard way the like to represent these character, but it doesn't happen just in videogames, it happens also in movies, Tv, advertisement, etc...
When Gamecenter.com was alive, they made a nice feature about girls and videogames. I remember they interviewed a girl about the "bouncing tits" of Lara, and she simply said that, whenever she played TR, she didn't think at her tits, she was thinking that Lara was someway cool because able to overcome any obstacle by herself.
Just my two cents. u.u;;;

Well i must say that i was suprised to se the poll results... And after a moments notice.. i realized that i must be flawed somehow... There are to possible scenarios that i can think of that those poll results come from... Either that there are a few bolocks out there thats trying to have som fun with it, or that the entire Female PSO community voted for there proper gender... Correct me if im wrong... But unfortunatly the video game business is male dominated... I would really be a happy man if the poll was true though... But lets face it... Its one of those scenarios im telling ya.

Oh, I love playing "Yahoo! Chess", but that's because I like chess. (Good enough reason, eh?) I used to play chess online rather primitively by opening "Chessmaster" and IMing the moves to my opponent. Since we did not have true online play at that time, we would communicate our moves via board coordinates.
The only problem is that none of my friends will play "Yahoo! Chess" with me, so I am never on there. However, my main issue is with the other, menial things... you know, card games and the like. These are not what I would really consider games fit to be compared to RPGs, action/adventure titles, FPS, et cetera. Even though I enjoy it, I would not include virtual chess in the comparison, either. However, if you really want to talk about all videogames in general, regardless of their type, then I'd suppose it is a fair comparison. Personally, I'm considering console games more than anything.
So, with all due respect, the argument changes from "Girls are a minority in gaming" to "Girls are the minority in the good games" ?
Well, heheh, I don't mean to change the course of the thread, but yes, that is my opinion. Hence, as aforementioned, most of my friends being males. So many girls I have met just think videogames are either worthless or "fun and cute".
What really drives me up the wall are the feminists, but that's another story.
The ones who actually like anything else are the scarce ones.

You're fortunate, then, man. People treat me like I'm an oasis in a desert. I remember when you posted about girls being attention whores, and while I'm not offended, I'll be honest; around here, I get attention, but, it's not on purpose. All I have to do is talk about videogames. When I worked at EB, all the time, morons would say "Wow, a girl who knows about videogames!" and point at me while drawing their friends' attention.
Of course, I'm also a Floridian, right by Miami Beach. So a lot of the girls here are scantily-dressed tan things who don't know a piece of shit from a candy bar. Either that or wrinkled old ladies.
From my recent experiences, girls are playing a lot more games then guys are.
Again, a lot of people would consider you fortunate. Me, well, I'm really indifferent. Few girls I've encountered share my taste in videogames, fiction, music and what not. So I'll stick with my group of guys.

ima a male and i mainly use my HUnewearl over the HUmar for a number of reasons.
-HUmars make up like 90% of online players.
-HUmars costumes look retarted (what is that a skirt, skort??)
-HUmars look like a gimpy Quasimodo with their left shoulder sticking out like that
-HUmars cant use Shifta and Deband and can only use lvl 15 techs.
i dont "role play" when i pick a female character, i pick a character that fits my playing style and for PSO it happens to be a HUnny

HUnewearl is also the weakest hunter, comparing ATP, in addition to having the second lowest ATA between them as well. =x

Low ATP and low ATA are easily compensated by support techs and god/arms units. When there's no FO around, who does everyone look to for techs? HUnewearl. Even when there is a FO around, the HUnewearl is like an "extension cord" providing s/d/j/z/resta in places where the FO sometimes can't reach (ie. sandwiched in between 4 sinow zoas on the other side of the room). Weakest hunter? I think not. Damage points isn't everything.

I was just curious as to how many girls play this game. Now I also know that the number of "true" girls that voted are just people who read from this forum.
It's all good to me.
I think in my whole experience with PsO, back on the DC, I have run into 3 girls.

Oh! Game! Game! You'd probably kick my ass, but *shrug*
In the end I think you capture the essence that is the core of all real gamers: They enjoy playing games they love. If that means somebody is playing Hearts or Bridge on-line, or some Mary Kate & Ashley game, I'm not going to knock somebody's tastes because in the end they are doing exactly what I do: playing video-games that hold their interests.
What really drives me up the wall are the feminists, but that's another story.
XD The feminist movement fucked you women of today over hardcore, and the fact that so few of you realise it has always humored me.
I still have a very low opinion of local girls in my area, and a low opinion of Halo too, although when my brothers are into it I'll join them for a round or two.
Again, a lot of people would consider you fortunate. Me, well, I'm really indifferent. Few girls I've encountered share my taste in videogames, fiction, music and what not. So I'll stick with my group of guys.
In the end, I think I've proven my point: Gender in videogaming really is meaningless.

Well, let me explain it, in a way.
Do I regret being a girl? No, of course not. I don't have penis envy. Do I think that there is something wrong with men who whistle at women? Nope, not at all. Do I think there is something wrong with people who cruelly beat on their spouse, whether male or female? Yes, naturally. I do not condone hateful sexism, but that goes for women as well as men. If I met a female who frequently slandered males, or whom looked at them as "dogs", I just as well would lose any respect I could have had for them.
A lot of hardcore "feminists" hate men with a passion, or constantly mock them. How does this make them "great" women? So what if a guy likes titties? Do those same women not like a tight ass? I mean, primarily, that is my issue, right there: Evidently, all men who heatedly admire a women's features -- even if they're not derogatory toward the sex -- are "pigs". However, the vise versa is perfectly fine. If that is not so, then the women should contain themselves and say they are not physically attracted to men, but only for their minds. If society were ideal and perfect, then a lot of these feminists probably would go out with neglected, loving, but homely-looking men, but instead they're either alone or with someone as perfectly trimmed looking as they. Or they're partnered with another feminist.
As far as the hardcore feminist is concerned, it goes something like this: It's okay that magazines like "Playgirl" exist, and men can be well-muscled modeling pieces of meat, but women? Oh, no. Those swimsuit magazines are just so horrible. But those male muscle mags are so terrific! They show a man in their proper, lowly, rugged state! If that is not the case with a feminist, then it is usually this: The male should appreciate the female as an equal, the relationship should be clean and simple, and the couple should essentially be the equivalent of a television sitcom's family in the early 1950's. If either of the partners dressed sexy, that would be wrong; if they expressed admiration for another, that would be a violation of trust (even though they had not actually done anything); if they were ever anything other than prim and perfect, they would be flawed.
That's what I disagree with. I also disagree with prostitution being outlawed, but if I continued onward, this topic would certainly get far off topic. My post in itself is already quite out there.
(This may also make me seem like I am sex crazed or something of the like, but I am actually a virgin, and I have no problem saying that, either. Why should it be an issue? I don't need to be a "Sex Poseur" or a "YAY VIRGINS USA!" kind of person.)
I have no problem with women being proud of what they are, but I do have a problem with anyone -- regardless of sex -- thinking they are genetically and intellectually superior to everyone else. That is the trait of feminism that irritates me, the superiority part.

I don't regret being a woman in the least. I'm glad I'm a woman. I'm proud of my boody in every way. Do all feminists have penis envy, no. In fact, that is just Freudian bullcrap. There is indeed wrong in violence, no matter the gender of the perpetrating party. Sexually derogatory remaks are just that, whether said by a man or a woman. They are wrong. I agree with what you say here, and you may be suprised to find that most femisists do.
If society were ideal and perfect, then a lot of these feminists probably would go out with neglected, loving, but homely-looking men, but instead they're either alone or with someone as perfectly trimmed looking as they. Or they're partnered with another feminist.
The women you speak of are the stereotyped feminist. Women like the Womynists in PCU. They exist, but they are in the minority, and they are NOT feminists. They miss the whole concept of feminism: to raise the state of women so they are equal with men. Women who run around treating men like dogs don't understand that.
And the fact of the matter remains that men treat women like dogs more often than the other way around. Does that excuse what these women do? Hell, no! But, they are NOT feminists. They are something else entirely.
Feminism is not about concealing sexuality. instead, one of it's objectives is to free it. To be freely sexual and yet not defined by the way you look. A woman is more than her "tits." On the flip side, a man is more than ripling muscle or a large piece of meat in his pants. The reason (most) Feminists get ticked off at porn or when you tell them they have a hot ass, is because you are objectifying them, reducing them to a body for the pleasure of another. The point; it is not a matter of being attracted to a person or not, but rather seeing a woman (or a man) as merely a body for another's pleasure. Very fine lne, but an important one.
Does that mean I detest porn. On the contrary, I LOVE porn. It has a very important place in society. Better I enjoy this skin mag than cheat on my bf/gf while they are away. My problem comes with things that are blatently designed to demean the model, whether male or female. Things like: rape fantasies, Bukkake, bondage, women in dog cages, the list goes on. Pictures of a woman or a man pleasing themselves. I'm all for that. Or a couple... coupling. Great! But thins other stuff just condones the type of things they depict. If you want to roleplay a rape fantasy in the privacy of your own home with someone you trust, great! The problem comes when someone sees that rape fantasy and decides that in the end the victim will like it anyway, so it doesn't matter.
Men should appreciate women as equals and vice versa. Do you not agree? Do you not want to be treated with the same amount of respect as the man next to you? The 1950's sitcomcouple is one of the things that feminism abhors. The woman in the kitchen, the two seprate beds, the woman submissive and quiet. As I said above, feminism advocates the liberation of sexuality.
You want to dress sexy, that's your perrogotive, but doing so does not mean it is open season on your ass. Whether that ass belongs to a man or a woman. To say that every relationship should only be based on mental and emotional traits is idiotic, though. We as human beings are sexual beings. Why else would there be so many of us? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif But because we are human beings we can practice a thing called restraint. I know that sounds odd for some of us, you know who I'm talkin about (Spy http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif). When we see a fine piece of ass, and all of us have seen them and thought that, we should remember that there is a person that that fine ass belongs to. And we owe it to them as fellow human beings to treat them as such, and not just that piece of ass.
That's what I disagree with. I also disagree with prostitution being outlawed, but if I continued onward, this topic would certainly get far off topic. My post in itself is already quite out there.
Prostotution should not be outlawed. This is also a point of contention among feminists. If it is legal and regulated, there is less chance of the spread of STD's or women dying in the street, shot by a john or abused by a pimp.
I have spent the last 10 minutes searching for a quote for this... here it is:
"Concerning whores: anyone who thinks it immoral or exploitive or dishonest to "pay a person to pretend to care about you" has obviously never flown first class . . . or gone to a psychiatrist, or eaten at a restaurant . . . or talked to a bartender they don't know"
-Spider Robinson
(This may also make me seem like I am sex crazed or something of the like, but I am actually a virgin, and I have no problem saying that, either. Why should it be an issue? I don't need to be a "Sex Poseur" or a "YAY VIRGINS USA!" kind of person.)
I fail to see how that makes you look sex crazed.
It isn't an issue. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
I have no problem with women being proud of what they are, but I do have a problem with anyone -- regardless of sex -- thinking they are genetically and intellectually superior to everyone else. That is the trait of feminism that irritates me, the superiority part.
And that is exactly what feminists are trying to stop. Feminism advocates Equality of the sexes. Not superiority. The women who run around saying they are better then men are not feminists by any definition. They have missed the point and the train left without them.
Sorry this is looooong and very off topic. If you would like to discuss this more, Tavia (or anyone for that matter), please PM me. I'd love to discuss it with you. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
