PSU original still playable without expansion? PS2

Yes, apparently European players don't even have the option to play with AOTI yet.

You can still play online with the original game: it's all on the same server, you simply won't have access to AOTI content (items, missions, et cetera).

A better question is: why would you play without the expansion? Even for euro players who can't import, why not play something that's... not painful in the mean time?

Don't forget that the original game received a patch that updated many of the game's gameplay systems: just attack, counter, grinding, etc., experience as well. For all intents and purposes they're both the same game at this point, one just doesn't have... new weapons and stuff. It's not like the old stuff has disappeared.
