You buy them at the Variety Shop. They have different looking ones, like..Cardboard Box, Something Nice (I think?) and an X-Mas one.

Basically, you place that box on an empty spot in someone's room, place an item inside the box as a present, along with a message.

Only that person can open the present, that I'm aware of. These come in handy especially if you ask for a friend to synthesize something for you and it finishes, but you're not online. They can just buy a Cardboard Box, then place it in your room, so you'll get it next time you sign on.
