I've heard the same, but the game isn't japan... it's a game. I mean, heck, Elly thinks some bot enemy in Ep2 is sexy, and I don't even think it had a gender type to begin with. I don't remember what it was, think it was one of the small hovering things that come out of the boxes and blow up in your face. Granted, I don't know japan's customs for falling in love with machines, but I wouldn't think it to far from looking down on a woman x woman relationship. Then again, I've never bothered to look such a comparison up. It's actually much more likely that they started communicating out of *Calus'* need for companionship - Considering the secrecy with which everything on Ragol was done, it seems highly unlikely that Calus was supposed to be communicating with anyone but the other two AIs and the researchers from Pioneer 1. So he goes and hax0rz himself an internet connection with Pioneer 2, finds Elly, likes her and starts talking to her. *shrug*

It's also strongly hinted in PSO that Calus is based off of an existing human - At the end of Knowing One's Heart, a random HUnewearl mentions that she'd heard that an engineer named Dr. Calus had been working on an 'independant computer', but had passed away when he was young. Hence he would have been 'male' to begin with, presumably being created to have a male voice, personality and appearance. Most scientists that are also actually hunters, as opposed to posing as it for a day in PSO are Forces - Alicia Baz and Montague come to mind, so it's not much of a stretch to picture Calus' appearance as coming from a scientist who also happened to be a FOmar.

Calus also isn't much of the traditional logical inhuman AI - Elly never realised he wasn't human until you take her to him in Knowing One's Heart, and Calus' motives and actions in Seat of the Heart are anything but logical, and seem almost entirely emotionally motivated. CALS is a different story, but CALS is not part of Calus' original programming, since it's something that was created by the Lab for the purpose of trying to force the more original, human-like part into using the MOTHER system in an attempt to finish the project.

better you than no one, I only played through ep2 a few times. To many of the levels were cramped (though the ones that where wide open were very nice.) It became a love/hate thing, with eventually more hate. It got to the point I would just run through as fast as I could and ignore everything else just so I could get the levels and at the difficulty I wanted. So there is an actual diffrence between the Cal you find in Ep1 and the one in ep2? I was always under the impression they were one and the same, or at least the second one was only slightly modified so as to work on pioneer 2 rather than the mines. Eps2 would have worked a lot better as a book than a game ;/

That's open to debate, actually - Calus himself says that after the Lab restored him he wasn't 'himself' anymore, the lab apparently altering his programming to create a sort of collective entity that the Calus we see in Seat of the Heart split off of in response to Elly's presence working at the Lab. CALS, the rest of the collective, claims that the original Calus is 'dead' and that the Calus we see in SotH is not the same, and Calus himself even acknowledges this. The question, of course, is whether or not this actually fucking matters with an AI - Assuming that he hasn't been fucked up too badly by the Lab, there wouldn't really be any functional difference between the Calus from the Mines and the Calus on Pioneer 2. Elly certainly doesn't seem to think it matters, at any rate. From here though, you get into the usual metaphysical debates - Do machines have souls? Would a sufficiently advanced AI have one if they generally don't? Would an AI that had a soul that was deactivated and thus 'died' retain the same soul after being reactivated in an altered form? If he wasn't actually altered and CALS was more of an external thing exerting an influence on him, would it be the same soul if the previous case led to not having the same soul?

These of course aren't questions that can be actually answered, but they make for great pondering.

(And then there's the odd little fan theory that Calus the AI is Dr. Calus the human, the latter having somehow transferred himself to a computer, which gets into even more metaphysical ponderings, heh.)
