Huh? Rich is a relative term. If everyone has the same amount of money, nobody is rich.

That being said, I have enough money to get by and buy the things I want.

I don't have the millions like some people but I don't need it, I have enough weapons and armor to supply every character for whatever class I want to be. You don't need to be rich to play the game, but for some people that is their goal.

I admit it, I would be perfectly happy if I had no in-game money problems. But if everyone had 99999999 meseta, there would be no need to further earn money. The economy would plunk, be dead.

Try looking at a bigger picture. It's not just a matter of gameplay or player behavior...
Like any other currency in a video game, board game, or real life, you use it to exchange for goods. The more you have the more you can exchange in either quantity or quality.

Sometimes people get the idea that to excel in this game or “society" is to have power. More money, grants you more S-ranks/goods, thus granting you more power/attention. I won't give names but we do have plenty of people like that here... Their egos clearly demonstrate it well.

Yes, that's what happened back in January of 06.
Inflation became so absurd, a new player could make 100k from just one ray-photon a piece. But since then inflation has gone significantly down.

People who sympathize with online hacking for PSU or abuse glitches typically do it for selfish reasons.
The people who complained and whined about SEGA fixing that debug room two updates ago, complaining in regards of losing their illegal items, were upset because they had lost a sense of power/opportunity.

All it is, is greed.
Believe it or not but it's perhaps more common than people would like to actually give credit to.
